The Pacific & East ern Railway company, which recently acquired the roadbed and rights of way of the Medford & Crater Lake railway, now have construction forces at work, and will at once extend the road to the Cratrr Lake region to the east, and ultimately to the coast about Tort Orford or Crescent City. Incidentally they will connect with a spur to the great Blue Ledge cop per mine in the Siskiyous, southwest of Medford, and as a smelter will be installed at these mines during the coming fall months, it is a part of the company's plans to also install coking ovns at the Medford coal mines, on the base of the Roxy Ann mountain, which the company now has under option. The company has already applied for a franchise for supplying fuel gas to the residents of Medford, which will receive fa vorable action. The thing which guarantees rapid advance in population and develop ment in the Koinic river vslley is the fact that orchard lands which here bring returns in excess of any other fruit district in the west, have not been unduly advanced in price, and anyone who invests at present can be assured of a winning in the immediate future. The city is in a healthful and prosperous condition and new build ings are being continuously erected to meet the growing demands. Here is also found the Oregon Soldiers' Home, United States weather bureau service, United States land office, a commodious hospital under course of construction, two large fruit packing houses. Here is also the largest and most important railroad division in the state of Oregon, outside of Port land, fully 300 men are continuously employed in these yards, creating and maintaining for Roseburg a monthly pay roll of many thousands of dollars, and insuring to her a con tinuous course of brisk business, not found in other cities, thus fortunate. Roseburg is also the home ;nd main division point of the dispatcher of trains for all the country south of Portland and north of the California line. The Roseburg postoffice shows larger receipts than any other city in southern Oregon, and this fact alone insures her supremacy as a commercial and population center. The city is supplied with one daily, one weekly and two semi weekly newspapers. Many beautiful homes are found within the city limits, and others are being continuously added. We have room, however, for many additional industries and manufactur ing plants. Roseburg is in need of, and can well support a good fruit cannery, several electric lines to reach thc rich outlying valleys, and a larger population to share in the benefits of the same. There is now under way a projected line of electric road connecting Roseburg with deep water in Coos county, and to show the character of the citizens of this city it may be said that $125,000 was raised toward this project recently in about one day's work. The people are self-asserting and bred of an in dependent spirit, this fact having conduced largely to the excellent condition of the city at the present time. Nor are the Roseburg people lacking in hospitality, for here the new comers will find a glad hand to meet and to welcome them among us as our neighbors and friends. Answering the inquiry as to re maining public lands in this county, it may be said that there are still unclaimed tens of thousands of acres of rich lands ready to receive the home-maker, but let none be deceived for these binds do not lie within a few miles of Roseburg; neither are they prairie lands ready for the plow. They are located in the foothills, many miles hack from Roseburg, but the soil is excellent, timber and water are plentiful, and the same balmy, equable climate hovers over these lands that is found at Roseburg. On the whole we believe that Douglas county and the city of Roseburg offer superior induce ments to the immigrant, whether he possesses money or not, for the moneyed men will find ample oppor tunity for safe investments, and the moneyless man will find nature with all her varied capabilities ready to respond to the touch of the toilers' hands. If you want to profitably invest money, or if you want such a home as Mother Nature has provided for her children who are willing to work, come to Douglas county. If you want to spend some money in the line of manufacture, land or stock specula tion, come to Douglas county.
