Harrlman has come and gone, the Harrlman boys have gone back to their eastern home after a hunflnK trip In Oregon, and the overland O. jft. & K. train from the east has resumed Its habit of arriving several hours late af ter behaving tolerably well while the Harrimans were In the Oregon country. The Southern Pacific train from San j Francisco has been running on nearly schedule time, but little Is expected from this train when Harrlman once off the coast. alnts long and lmid coTrrtmie .o d against the wretched service maintained by the Harrlman trains. ' Sporadic attempts at running on sched ule time do not satisfy the citizens who depend U6on their mail for a great share of their business and they are still up In arms over the delayod malls. The overland train from the east, due at 9:45 o'clock yesterday morning, did not arrive until 2:30 o'clock In the af ternoon. The first section of the South ern Pacific train from Ran Francisco was on time, but the second section did not arrive until 8:40. This train was due at 7:25 a. m. For a time the Southern Pacific ran its trains on a falrlv g od schedule, but in the past week the operating depart ment hns dropped back into its old ways and the trains come in at any old time. On the O. R. & N. no effort is made to give good service. The operating de partment never hao attemptod to do anything but save money. Trains oi from 14 to 17 coaches aro laboriously pulled into the station by midget engines th.tt should have gone to the scrap heap years ago. Instead of dividing the large trains Into sections and bringing them into the I'nlon de pot somewhere near the time . set for their arrival, the company adds on as manv coaches as the engines can drns over the steep grades and lets them roll down on the gravity system. Whenever a station Is reached where the crowd is so great they cannot be tacked into the already filled coaches, another coach is coupled on and the en gine given another supply of fuel and water. Thei operating department never thinks of adding another engine ani splitting the train Into two sections. That would require the added expense of a new crew, besides another engine. HAVE MERRY DAY First Christian Congrega tion Celebrates with j Supper and Games. i Good old county-fair sports and games were indulged In by the members of the First Christian church at their picnic at the 1-ewls and Clarke fair grounds. Kveryone who attends church with the congregation and some who do not were there, and the big crowd filled the gov ernment building and overflowed Into the shady spots around the Island. The day was spent In a variety of field sports and athletic contests. The women of the church furnished the pic nic dinner which served ns a prelude to the games of the afternoon.
