Conrt at, 'SU OaUsa, psoaa Jsaia Me. rarUaad. j By James W. Coffroth. (Pacific Coi.t Ptbm Laed Wire.) San Francisco, Sept. 6. The first thing that impressed me yesterday at Brttt's training quarters was Jamea Ed ward's remarkable strength and how ho has developed since he fought his first fight for me against Hegarty five and a half years ago. This fact Is espec ially brought out and made prominent in his work with Tlv Krellng. Three years ago, Tlv had but little trouble In han dling Britt in the clinches and could toss him about the floor of a gymnaalum with ease. Now the ahoe fits the other foot and Jimmy pulls and tugs Krellng about as though the latter were a mere pigmy; This recently acquired strength of the native son is going to be a great help to him, especially In the clinches. But what la of more Importance, he has gained power without sacrificing bis speed, which seems to me even greater than before. And Brltt alwaya waa a fast fighter, much faster in fact than ba has ever been given credit for. Jimmy says he has also acquired a punch. Of this 1 know nothing, but It stands to reason that with his increased strength his punch must naturally be more powerful. It is seldom that a fighter attains physical perfection as late In life as Hritt oHnenlallv when one Btarts fight ing so young. The average lightweight fihtn is nHuallv at the zenith of his career after about three years In the business, or when he Is in the early twenties. Today, however, Britt la much better physically than ever be fore in his life. He has been boxing now, both as an amateur. and profes sional, for close on to 10 years, and it Is really surprising to see him bulld in, nn to his best form when one would Butmuae it to be about the time for him to break down. it we are to compare the fighters, I would say that Britt will be stronger than Gans. He will also be much rast er on his feet, and equally rapid with his hands. Gans will excel at blocking. I look upon the fight aa an even-money bet. Tha royal Italian oommlsslon on secondary education has preeented Ita report, whloh will, form tha basis of the forthcoming' legislation on thla important subject Briefly, the commission recommends a three years' preparatory oourae of Instruction In tha Italian, language and Italian hia tory, imparted by meana of anecdotes; In colloquial French; and In the' rudl manta of acience and geography. After thla course of general study tha com mission advises the creation of three different kinds of high schools class ical, scientific and "mixed" or literary one of which , will be chosen try the pupil according to hla natural bent The curriculum of the classical school should consist ot Latin. Greek and French; that of the scientific should comprise mathematlca, natural science, with special attention to laboratory work, Italian, French, and another lan guage, preferably German ; in the third or mixed acnooi, iaiin anouia oe taught, not - however, as an end in It self, but aa a means of understanding better modern literature ana histor GeocraDhy should be here imparted the pupil aa a living thing, not as mere dots on a map. It advocates the for mation of five secondary technical schools for the study of agriculture, manufactures, surveying, commerce, and actuarial and accountants' work Above these superior professional schools should crown the edifice. Italy, it has been said, la the land of projects, the country of first vdlumes. This elaborate seheme- of reform will not be carried into praetlce Immediately; but doubtless parts of It will be adopt ed. What strikes the British observer aa the main defect in the existing sys tem is the faot that Italian education does not aim sufficiently at the forma tion of character. It produces Instruct ed men, but it does not produce citlzena conscious of their civic duties and anx ious to perform" them. The modern Italian citizen takes little part In pub lic life; he would fight for his country in- war, but is loth to vote for hor at elections. Moreover, as Slgnor Glollttt recently observed, the Instruction ot women leaves muoh to be desired, es nclallv In the south. Tha following semi-official note haa been lasued by tha Greek government: "Dispatches from Salonika state that a Bulgarian band attacked several Greek peasants at Kolalno 1 and MaJcrynovon. near Strumnitaa.
