FAST RUNNING CAR STOPS IN TEN FEET City Dads Did Not Reallto They Were raveling Rapidly Brought tfp WltlrSbort Jerka, Given Pleasure Ride and Taken Home Happy. Several decided chances will be made In the automobile ordinance as regards peed and operation In the city limits. This Is a result of the ride over the city given the council yesterday by the . Portland Automobile club. Two hours were spent traversing the congested business districts, louowing streetcars, turning sharp corners, and It was fully demonstrated to the councilmen tnat 10 miles an hour In the 'ongested district wsj h reasonable maximum. "Whv. we hardly seemed to ba moV' Ing nt 10 miles an hour," said Council man Drlscoll. "We followed alongside of streetcars mat went zu miles an hour on our residence streets and at times the register showed 26 miles an hour. For myself I am confident that 0 miles an hour from Eighth street to the water front Is an equable speed with eight miles turning corners,. In the outlying streets 20 miles an fier is not too great a speed. Automobiles are able to dodge while streetcars are not." Practically every member of the council Is of the opinion that 10 miles sn hour In the congested districts and from 15 to 20 miles in the residence RESTORES GRAY HAIR NATURAL COLOR xnna its falline out. and positive ly removes Dandruff. Those to be taken Into custody are V. R. Avery. 48 Third street, Mrs. Julia Marquam. care of Judge Carey; Frank Motter, 209 Commercial building; Wil liam H. H. Morgan, 788 Hawthorne avenue; A. C. Nunn, 662 Sher MARRIAGE OF LAFE CULMINATION OF Romance rode with the team of run away horses which ran over and severe ly injured Lafe V. Pence, vice-president of the Pence company, two years ago. Pence suffered a broken leg and several minor Injuries, but at the Couch surgery where he was carried for treat ment, he met Jliss Jessie Billings, his nurse, to whom he will be married at 6 o'clock this afternoon. When Mr. Pence was carried Into the hospital the first person his eyes, rested portion is a fair maximum of speed. Eight miles is thought to be reason able in turning corners. On this point members of the automobile club and council are very likely to concur. It was shown definitely the great power the driver has over the machine. Howard Covey of the firm of Covey & Wallace, who was driving a Pierce Great Arrow car with a party of four, gave a quick stopping exhibition at the corner of Eleventh and Washington street. Covey was driving down the 4 rer cent errade at 15 miles an hour and came to a dead stop in less tnan 10 feet after anDlvinK the brakes. Had it been on earth the stop could have been made in four feet, the hard sur face paving allowing the wheels to skid considerably. One thins that should be incorpor ated in the ordinance, the councilmen say, Is that of promiscuously passing motionless cars on the left side. This is considered dangerous since there is a Nkellhood of persons crossing the streets in front of the cars who can not be seen. Since the councilmen have been given the ride the automobile ordinance can be discussed In the next committee meeting with a greater degree of in telligence than would be possible had the demonstration not been given. After the tests had been mp.cle the councilmen were given a pleasure ride to Claremont Tavern with some high speeding on the level stretches. Over B0 applications for warrants have been filed with the city attorney and It is expected that another large batch of complaints will be sworn to at once. There has- been considerable criticism by the police because of Judge Cameron's action in falling to impose fines In any of the "tall grass" pases, even where It is shown that the prop erty owner has received a 10 days' no tice to obey the ordinance.
