I foot t Rind r ! -f a a ' (T IS, unfortunately, Inevitable that every pleasure must have tta com pensating trouble or inconvenience. So, In these hot and "sticky" Au gust days the maiden who amuses her self by Imagining- that she Is a mermaid, while she disports hersef In the ocean. tor an hour or so In the morning, wishes roost heartily for an hour after that she were a mermaid Indeed, and might sim ply silo back Into the water, give her tialr a hurried combing with th pro verbial (and Impossible) golil ,b of Heine's Lorelei and thus ioii.-... r her toilet complete. But the mere fact that all the toll of washing and drying her hair lies before her does not deter her frdm the finest of summer pleasures. She by no means agrees with the man who committed suicide because ho was tired of dressing and undressing; she would rather find a way to make dressing and undressing less tedious! And so she seeks a method by which the consequent Irksome labor may be lightened, and listens eagerly to all advice on the subject. In this article she will find the help she needs. In the first place, before going Into the water, the hair should be arranged so that it will not be hard to loosen when It Is sticky with salt Coll it as becom ingly as you please, but let it not be too tlehtlv nor too elaborately done. Pro tect it as far as possible with a rubber can or a linen or silk bandana lined with thin sheet rubber the latter will probably cover the hulr and Is certainly the more attractive. It Is possible to shampoo one's hair In fresh water, but not In salt. If your bathing takes place In some Inland river, occasionally take a cake of tar soap along and give your head and hair a thorough washing. In a so-called "plno tree" river, where the water Is colored a rich brown from Jhe Dine needles which line its bed, this nea the ideal shampoo. But woe to tbe TTHton who attempts this during a ea bath! Not only will the usual publicity Reducing the Weight WILL bathing the abdomen in warm vinegar reduce Its corpulency? Mine Is very prominent, much to my dis comfort. In fact, 1 am gaining Hush all over, and my hlu and wulat are too fleshy to be comfortable. Do you tbink It would be harmful to bathe the abdomen in any thing that would help to reduce It in alief I am trying to diet myself, but do not get a much exercise as I ihould have. Are eggs, lean beef, coffee without sugar, or carrots fattening! A CONSTANT READER J t F. T. Bathing the abdomen In anything at 11 will not reduce corpulency to any great extent. I am giving you exercises for the reduction of abdomen, hips and waist and general rules to prevent ex cess of flesh. Of the foods you mention, carrots are s fattening, eggs slightly so, and coffee without sugar turn mail, very rare, meat not at all so. To Beauce the Abdomen. In standing position, clasp the hands over the abdomen. Contract tbe muscles of the abdomen and bend at the hips six times, k teiilng the muscles well contracted throughout the bending. Rest by taking three deep breaths between each exercise. To Beduce the Hips. Here are several exercises that art excel lent hip-reducers: 1. Bring the knee up to the chest, remain, lng perfectly erect. Practice in alternate movements. 2. Place hands on hips, shoulders well hk Raise the leg. with knee flexed, and f ive a high, quick side kick, bringing the oot oack again to the floor. Repeat ten tlgMl first with the right foot, then with left. Take standing position, hands on nine. nrf rotate the hips, bending tbe knees' an3 keeofng the chest and shoulders Immovable. Contract au me muacies usea in wis exer cise and resist. Bending exercises also are good. To Reduce the "Waist Measure. Deep breathing will help to reduce the waist measure ana folarg toe bust. The r ' ft : " Pi ( i a i . attend and hamper all her actions, but the salt In the water will form a thick crust over the soap, and will combine with It In such a way as to make her hair absolutely unmanage able. The best thing for the ocean bather to do is to wait for the washing un til after her dip and then to give her hair a good, cold shower. Not only should she let It have the full bene fit of the shower bath which she takes to remove the salt from her bathing suit, but she should then tie It up securely, and after she is dressed, she should don a kimono and remove all tho surplus salt by a cold spraying with a regular bath spray. She should let this water be as cold as can be borne, and should continue the treatment until the Bcalp tingles. Then she should wrap the head tight ly In a dry Turkish towel, and should twist the hair In It, squeezing hard until all the water has been ex tracted that Is possible in this way. When this has been done, she should begin rubbing the scalp and hair with the towel, using a fresh one If the other has become really wet, and should continue until the hair feels only damp and does not drip anywhere. Once this is done, the hardest part of the drying still remains. Need less to say. the quick and eaay patent heat dryers are not popular In mid summer, for whatever be their other virtues, they are most uncomfortably hot. Fanning Is, then, the best method. There are some persons whom the contlpuous flap of the fan drives al most wild with nervousness, but they have yet to learn the lesson that 'if the fan does not touch the face or hair, but simply blows the air on them, no discomfort will be felt. And, too, a word to those whose arms tire quickly never fan by mov ing the entire arm, but use the part from the elbow to the wrist only. This sounds hard, but may easily be 7T r Advice to Correspondents by Mrs. Henry Symes stretching exercises, too, are splendid as walat depleters. Poise the arms high above the head; then, holding knees straight, try to touch tho floor with the finger tips. Stand erect, place hands on hips, bend from waist as tar as possible to the right; then to the left. Bules for the Seduction of Flesh. Avoid all starchy and sweetened food, all cereals, vegetables containing sugar or starch, such as peas, beans, corn, potatoes, etc. Have your bread toasted; sprinkle it with salt Instead of using butter. Milk, I regret to say. If it be pure and good, is fat tening. Skimmed milk may be drunk. Hot water Is an excellent substitute for other liquids. Add a little of the Juice of limes or lemons to it. If you choose. Llmlf your sleeping hours to seven at the outside. No naps. You must take exercise. If you cannot walk at least five miles a day, and do not wbeel, go to one of the in- . stltutlons where mechanical massage is given. Several of my correspondents report excellent results from this method of get ting the vigorous exercise they require. The system Is thoroughly wholesome and not ex pensive. In reducing flesh one fact to rec ollect la that fat Is carbon. Oxygen destroys or burns out carbon. You must consume the carbon by the oxygen you take through your lungs. The mure exercise, the more oxygen and consequent destruction of fat by the one healthful method of curing obesity. The more starch and sugar you eat. tbe mora carbon to burn away. Steaming the Face Kindly give me the formulas for orange flower cream and the rouge Bloom of Roses. Next, rub vas eline into thej roots. In order to stimu late the growth of the hair and to eliminate any possible remaining dampness. Steaming the face is an excellent cure for pimples and blackheads, provided your skin Is not too dry and delicate. Wrap a heavy towel around the head, and place the face directly in the steam from a basin of boiling water, and sim ply let the face receive Its full, benelit for as long as you can stand it For a more heroic treatment, make a card board tube of a size to fit over the basin and rest the face at one end of this, wrapping a towel about the neck and head to prevent any of the steam es caping. After the steaming, wash with cojd water, dry by absorption, rub ou a good cold cream, rub it off a minute later and powder' lightly. Questions on Care of the Hair Kindly give me the formula tu make the hair naturally curly. I do not remember the Ingredients, but it said to moisten hair freely and It would curl upon drying. I have read that whisky rubbed into a baby's scalp every day will promote the growth of the hair "and keep the scalp ' clean. Kindly advise me whether It would have a tendency to turn the hair gray. Our Idle maiden, who longed for It will not mako the hair "naturally curly" nothing but nature can do, that but it will give a beautiful, though, of course, a temporary curl. Whatever you do, I adjure you, do not Injure your baby's hair for life and per haps cause worse harm, by meddling with the hair or scalp at all. A good washing once In a while during the bath will keep the scalp clean and the hair will grow by Itself without assistance. The white hair you found is the first fruit of your Ignorant cruelty. Thirty years later will be plenty of time to be gin with tonics and growers! To Remove Warts Kindly tell me how to get rid of warts. I have four or five seed warts, and they bother me a great deal. The bair has become quite thin at the temples and directly back of the ears, please advise a "poor man" i what to do. J. T. J. You have omitted one Important point In your category. Is your hair dry or oilyT I am giving you treatment for comparatively dry hair. If it Is mark edly oily you must "write to me again. First, then, go to a barbr and have him singe your hair every two or three weeks every time, that is, that you get your hair cut. This will prevent the hair from splitting at the ends.
