The Driftwood cottage at Long Beach
waa th scene of much gaiety on Mon
day evening, the occasion being a large
' birthday dinner given In honor of four
.or the guest and of th son of lira
Lynlff, th hospitable owner of the
hotel. For five people In different part
of th world to be born on the same day
or tne montn, ana to meet on that par
ticular day at a place far distant from
any of their homes, was a coincidence
which the guests of the Driftwood
thought amaslng and worthy of much
celebrating. Each celebrant had a cake

Concert Attract Uany,
A concert which attracted large
crowd to'Long Beach on Sunday after
noon was given on the west porch of the
Long Beach hotel by the orchentra. The
program consisted of the following
numbers: "Americas patrol,' Hearts
and Flowers," EuHtudlantlna," "Hap
py Heine," "Selections From Faust,"
''Waltz Me Around Again, Willie" and
"Madam Butterfly," The large lawn
adjoining the hotel was thronged with
people, as well an the walks surround
ing, and everyone voted the musical
treat an Innovation which all hoped will
be soon repeated.
For two delightful hours on Thursday

Fort Canby wa visited on Wednea

bonfire Saturday evening. The eve
ning was spent delightfully with games,
songs and recitations. Besides candy
and peanuts they had a atermelon

inglng popular songs.

On Monday evening a party of young
people from Long Beach had a hav
rackSparty. They left Long Beach at
o'clock and drove to llwaco where they
partook of light refreshments. They i
took with them a German band of five
pieces and with musio and stories they
passed a merry evening. Those nrea-
ent were: Leona Nutson, Harry Tinker,
May Parker, Ernest Jiesler, Hazel Pot
tinger. Walter Petty, Tad Park. Mvr
tle Tinker. Charlie Marshall. Fred .T-
cobson, Harold Scott, George Tinker,
Sadye Kindred and Dud Pottenger. The
success of this party was due to the
combined effort of Dud Pottenrer and
Charlie Marshall.
Among Portland people who attended

Hard Tim Party.
The hard time party given on Tues
day evening by the management of
Sylvan hall was attended by about 200
people, over half of whom were dressed
to represent sweet poverty. The cos
tumes which were most attractive and
voted the most unique were those worn
by MIbs Hazel Pottlnger who repre
sented Sis Hopkins, and C. Marshall
who was a typical "Virginian." Th
Jacobson orchestra played in their usual
catchy manner and few left before th
trains of the last waltz proclaimed th
hour of 12.
On Tuesday evening, an automobile
party left the lrirtwood, went down to
the rocks and then up the beach to the
wrecks, re.urnlng the 18 miles in 20
minutes, a rate of speed glec.ullv In
dulged In by the chauffeur who feels
himself far -removed from the arm of
the law and unrestricted by any speed
limit. Those who en loved this trln
were: Miss MarSe Brown. Mrs. Mae Bea
ver. Dr. and Mrs. L. Smith, L. E. Ther
kelsen, Mr. and Mrs. N. Codd, Miss
Genevieve Codd. Mrs. T. Breslauer and

A Sunday Breakfast.
Louis Long of Portland came to the
Breakers on Saturday last. On Sunday
he was host at a breakfast at the hotel
hlch had been preceded by an auto
ride to the Rocks and then to the Solano
reck. Those enjoying his hospitality
were Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Michel of
Spokane, Miss Hortenne Goldsmith of
Ligonler, Indiana, and Miss Gennatne
Samuel of Portland.

Wrecks a Attraction.
The beach this year offers a' new at
traction in the line of wrecks, the old
"Harvest Home" and "Patrimpus,"
which have laJn on the ocean bed for
so long, being mow nearly covered up by
the sand Into which they are gradually
sinking out of sight, being completely
forgotten In th Interesting sight of the
''Solano." a four-masted sailing vessel
of San Francisco, which came ashore
last winter and which is standing per
fectly erect. Imbedded in the sand, about
four miles above Ocean Park. To the
landsman, the ship seems in perfect con
dltlon, but the captain, who Is living
with his family on tne wreck, realizes
that a hard problem is before him to
accomplish his task In again launching

of all kind, filled with people, ar seen

popular conveyance being the big
fierce-Arrow touring car, wnicn is run

main, after a visit of five week at the
Hotel Breakers, went to Seaside on
Wednesday to spend the remainder of the
summer season at the Moore.

Dr. Millard C. Holbrook left for Port
land on Tuesday after a three day's
visit at the Jeffery cottage, where Mr.
Holbrook is spending a few weeks with
her mother.

Miss Louise Conant, a graduate of
Munich, and an artist well known In
Portland, where she lectured at Chau
tauqua last summer ha a cozy little
horn near Holman' station, where she
spent the winter and 1 still rusticating
prior to her return to her home In Rock

to Portland and mak that city her
bom after her visit to the east.
