Dodds has lost his life in the Wil lamette river by drowning and this af ternoon the bottom will be dragged at the foot of Ankeny street, where It is believed he must havs lost his balance In trying to go on board last Thursday night. Dodds has been In the employ of the Columbia Digger company for several months as fireman on the Paloma, and seemed very well satisfied with his work. Thursday night he returned to the boat about 11 o'clock slightly In toxicated, hut went ashore again, lie went up town and, having lost his hat, borrowed one from a friend end started for his boat again. That waa the last aeen of him. The hat was found the following morning on the lower dock at the foot of Ankeny street and the supposition Is that Dodd must have lost his balance and toppled Into the river. No cries were heard by the watchman on the boat, but It is possible that Dodd sank before he had time to make an outcry. The missing fireman was about 40 years of age, and single. He was much thought of by his employer. Captain Hacket. who will Institute a thorough search of the river this afternoon. The river forms an eddy at the particular place where Dodd is supposed to have fallen In, so that little trouble would likely be experienced In recovering tha DOdy. rne services or iiugn liraay, wno makes a specialty of recovering drowned people from the river, were sought early this morning, but Brady la rusticating aown Dy tne seaside ana n-nce 1 aptain Hacket will do the dragging himself this afternoon. Mohawk Ext 8o, Lou Dillon oc, Oriental Liner Mcomodia Gets Half Cargo Only. Owing to the scarcity of flour the oriental liner Nicomedia of the Port land & Asiatic Steamship company will go out with leas than half a cargo this trip. Ordinarily she carries about 6.000 tons of flour, or (6,000 barrels, bu. it is a question If she will have 2.000 tons on board when she aalls next Saturday morning. There Is very little flour left over, and shipments to the orient will there fore remain very light until the new crop product begins coming In. The steamship company is hopeful to be able to secure flour for the steamer Nu mantla, which is scheduled to sail dur ing the first part of next month since prices will likely then be considerably reduced. Just now millers are asking $3.75 a barrel, whereas the orientals are hardly ever willing to pay more than $3.80 or $8.40 at the most. The liners have gone filled to the hatches with flour every trip for the past year or more, and It was feared some time ago that one or more short cargoes would have to be started before the arrival of the new crop. The Nico media Is still at the Alaskan dock dis charging Inward cargo, but will com mence loading about Monday. WAS WORST AT SEA. Quln of Walla Wnlla have joined Mrs. Annabelle Parrlsh s art cluaa. Wednesday Night's Electrical Storru Centered Off the Coast. The electrical storm which passed to the west of Portland Wednesday night made things lively for mariners off the Oregon and Washington coasts, in the vicinity of the Columbia river and Cape Flattery. For several hours during the night the sky was illuminated with the moat vivid streaks Xt llahtnlnr and deafening peals of thunder terrified some of the more timid navigators. Those who were in the worst of the storm .ay Its equal has never been seen here on the coast. Incoming steamers bring tales or tne rare electrical storm but so far aa known no damage was done. Captain Johnson of the steam schooner Tiver ton, which reached Aberdeen yesterdsy from San Francisco, reports having been in the very midst of the storm. He declares It was a record breaker and made things anything but pleasant. The rain fell In sheets and everything awash on bosrd. The lightning played In blinding flashes and the thunder ws. deafening. MARINE NOTES Portland Bank Statement.
