The Portland stock exchange la no
mora Sine the first week of July It
has been allent and Inoperative and the
voice of the ticker has been hushed,
In Its place bas corns the stock and bond
exchange, conducted by tha - Roberts
company. This company hae taken
over tha business of tha old exchange,
but la, doing business on a different
plan, according to tha statement of the
manager. It . Is now a " commission
brokerage business, -where men sell
what they want In open market without
manipulation or favor.
The Portland stock exchange, has had
a varied experience since Us organisa
tion a year and more ago. Several times
It has Deen , on tha verge of collapee,
but eaoh time haa rallied for a. little
longer. Of late It haa, been reported
that Its main object was tha sale, of
stocjc in the Home Telephone company,
but this has been denied .by the manage
ment of the company. - ,
Much complaint of tha exchanga haa
been made time and again by thoae who
bought atocka and afterwards alleged
they had paid mora for them than the
Hated prloe In the eastern exchange
The bualness Of tha exchanr drifted
away until when the first week In July
came tha place was closed, ostensibly
for a .week.
The board of directors met during
that time, however, and? decided to close
up shop for an Indefinite period of time.
The - exchange waa 'turned . over to
satisfy foreign Indebtedness, but was
iier taxen over by . the Roberta mm.
