say he was formulating plans by which
to close up everything according to law,
snd if he had been let alone within a
month or two the same results would
have been obtained wjthout dissension.

was the first closed Sunday The Dalles
has experienced since it waa lncorpor
ated as a city, over 40 years ago. 8a
loons were closed all day and some cigar
stands, but confectioners and Ice cream
venders' establishments generally were
open. Very many habitual Imbibers
purchased a supply of wet roods Sat
urday night and spent Sunday In quiet
retreats. Tne town Sunday waa very
quiet and there was not the least dis
turbance.
Some threats were made by saloon
keepers that any confectioner or tee
cream dealer who kept open would be
prosecuted, and today will tell whether
these were Idle threata or spoken .'n
earnest.

'court has adjourned the May session
, of court. The only cases tried at the
adjourned session were those for vio-
tne local option law. Dr. Fleener

found guilty ty a jury and each was
fined fiiO. To a separate Indictment
each pleaded guilty to selling liquor.
The judge reserved sentence until the
next session of court, when a numbei;

The cases against tha several ditch
companies indicted for not placing
screens at tne neaagates came up on
demurrer, which was sustained by the
court on the ground that the law re
quiring screens to be placed at the head-

Sharp and Ray McHargue were arrested
Thursday night at Halsey as they
stepped off the Cottage Grove train
and were brought to Brownsville, They
were suspected of robbing Anderson's
jewelry store and Howes' grocery stone
on the night of July 9. Their hearing
was neia earuraay. jnoy were dl
charged, as there was Insufficient evi
