The complainants say he was formulating plans by which to close up everything according to law, snd if he had been let alone within a month or two the same results would have been obtained wjthout dissension. Yesterday was the first closed Sunday The Dalles has experienced since it waa lncorpor ated as a city, over 40 years ago. 8a loons were closed all day and some cigar stands, but confectioners and Ice cream venders' establishments generally were open. Very many habitual Imbibers purchased a supply of wet roods Sat urday night and spent Sunday In quiet retreats. Tne town Sunday waa very quiet and there was not the least dis turbance. Some threats were made by saloon keepers that any confectioner or tee cream dealer who kept open would be prosecuted, and today will tell whether these were Idle threata or spoken .'n earnest. The circuit 'court has adjourned the May session , of court. The only cases tried at the adjourned session were those for vio- tne local option law. Dr. Fleener aniTV. u. rreanor or . The cases against tha several ditch companies indicted for not placing screens at tne neaagates came up on demurrer, which was sustained by the court on the ground that the law re quiring screens to be placed at the head- gates had been repealed. July IS Richard Sharp and Ray McHargue were arrested Thursday night at Halsey as they stepped off the Cottage Grove train and were brought to Brownsville, They were suspected of robbing Anderson's jewelry store and Howes' grocery stone on the night of July 9. Inlaws the first normal school far north Idaho. The south part of tha tut has had them and will have them again this year, at Boise and Pocatello, but It la doubtful If the attendance at either will equal this one. CLATSOP TO EXHIBIT AT THE STATE FAIR (Special Diapateh to The Journal.) Salem, Or.. July 15. Clatsop county will exhibit at the Oregon state fair In September. Secretary Frank Welch of the state fair board has received this notification. Manager Whyte of the Astoria Commercial club win have charge of the exhibit and many new and original Ideas in publicity-are expected to emanate from the New Orleans booster to advertise the resources of Cjalsop county. Marion county expects to have the finest exhibit it has ever had but will not compete for the $t00 premium of fered for the best county exhibit.
