SMOKERS ASK USE OF
REAR CAR PLATFORM
Vancouver People Do Not Like New
Order of Portland Rail
way Management
Vancouver. Wash.. July 11. An agita
tion has been started here to secure tbe
riarht for smokers to smoke In the rear
section upon the Vanoouver cars : be
tween Portland and Vancouver. A peti
tion is to be circulated which will be
presented to General Manager Fuller.
It is contended that as the cars In
service cn the Vancouver-Portland run
were -constructed' with a section net
asidefor wnokers, and-moreover os the
run is a long one, smokers should be
allowed the. use of the weed. When the
railway company put a .top to smoking
on the rear piatrorm. or tne city car.
the same rule went Into effect on -the
Vancouver run, although no complaint
had ever boen Tnade by local people.
One local citizen said: "If the com
pany would spend a little money giving
us better accommodation, upon the Van
couver ferry, so that we do not -take
our lives in our own hands every time
we cross the river. Instead cf depriving
a large number of people of pleasure,
there would be a much' better feetlna-
toward the company In-Vancouver than
battery; came to trial before Judge
Stipp yesterday. The Jury rendered
verdict of not guilty.
