New ell, president of the state board of hor ticulture, thia morning, "the apple crop doe not look so promising and will be smaller than last year." Already Ore gon apples are In the market and are being shipped from Th Dalle almost dally. In the opinion of fruit srrowers had it not been tor the increase or acreage Oregon would be very much short of the usual annual crop. The quality will not be lessened, and. Indeed, promises on tne otner nana to excel. That all Oregon fruit will soon be noted the world over ha been demon strated by the cherry season Juat passed. Three times the number of cher ries have been sold this season, mostly In the Willamette valley, than ever be- lore in tne history of the state. Mr. Newell believe the demand of the Washington canneries for the Oregon product has brought about great good tor uregon riuit growers. "Never before has there been a mar ket for Oregon cherries after the first shipment were made." said Mr. New ell, "and had not the Boat tie and Ta cora canneries asked for Oregon fruit tne same conditions would have pre vailed again. The result ha been that the bottom has not dropped out of th market as haa been the case year after year and the Oregon grower ha ex perienced keen demand for bis fruit throughout to season. In soms localities the vine are as good a usual but in a majority of the yards and especially old one there are many missing hills. The roots are alive but there Is no growth.
