Nearly 1,000 popl assembled In the pioneer town of MHwaukl yesterday to celebrate Independence day. Th ex ercises were largely of a literary na ture and were presided over by Mayor Schlndler. who made the opening ad dress. Then came the reading or the Eeclaratlon of Independence Dy Miss ow Albee. Miss Florence Olson, who represented address in which she called attention to the fact that It was in Mllwaukle that Oregon's initiative and referendum law had its origin, and declared that the old pioneer town deserved the credit of securing to the people of the state the privilege of making their own laws without the aid of a legislature. The oration of the day was delivered by Homer D. Angell, a native son of Mllwaukte and a graduate of the state university. The exercises closed witn tns singing of "Th Star-Spanglsd Banner." The afternoon was given over to va rious kinds of amusements and sports. Mr. Mercer says It la Impossible for him to leave his store at all times to carry the mall to the trains. Shanahan. corresponding secre tary of the Oregon Humane society, an nounced today that 10 drinking foun tain which had been ordered for Port land were under construction and would b erected this summer. Mr. Shanahan said there had been considerable una voidable delay In seouring the fountains but that work on them Is now being pushed with all haste. In regard to the fountain donated by the National Humane alliance of New Tork City, Mr. Shanahan has received a letter from the organization stating that tha fountain would reach Portland In October. This fountain will cost about 21,000 and Is of Maine g-ranite. Maria Laghlan, Governor Chamber lain's ex-cook, appeared again In the municipal court today to prefer charges against Officer Robson, whom she de clares assaulted her. Robson waa called by Mrs. Chamberlain theother day to take Maria to the police station be cause she refused to stay "fired" when the mistress of the governor's house hold told her that her services wer no longer required. Maria Laghlan declares Robson handled her roughly and her arm is black and blue. Judge Cameron dismissed the charges.
