The mine are drifting la from the north, having beet, carried by the ica of last spring fram the' vicinity of .Vladivostok, wher they were placed by tha Russians. They aay several craft have epoountered the ex plosive missile; and the Mathilda was taken through the strait by daylight to avoid disaster. The Mathilda arrived here Saturday night from Moji, via San Francisco. 8ha returned from a voyage to Taku, hav ing Balled hence for that place n March of this er with a cargo of lumber. Th officer aay the voyage out was very atormy part of the way, and when about 1,000 mile out from th mouth of tha Columbia. h ran into a fearful hurricane. Oil had to be used In large Quantities In bringing the steamer about ao aa to run before the wind, and despite thla precaution ton of water engulfed her whila she labored with 'her beam paralelling the monster waves. The storm lasted for a couple of days in all its fury and the oil supply was -greatly reduced, but U helped much and the only damage was the breaking In of two cabin doors. They were wrenched from their hinges like so much cardboard.- - ' ' The Mathilda will go to FremantR Australia, with her lumber cargo for the American Trading company, and then proceed 'to Newcastle, New Soytb Wales to load coal for San Francisco. It is quite probable that she will return to Portland, because she is considered one of th most suitable craft for lum ber in these watera at present She la a sister ship of th steamer Finn, which la now discharging cement at Greenwich dock preparatory to loading lumber at Tacoma for Fremantle. - The officers of th Mathilda and Finn visited the Oaks ..yesterday afternoon and enjoyed th coneert given there by the Norwegian inging soclotie of Port land and Astoria.
