doing a rushing business when Patrick
Maher and Lou Wagner appeared on
the scene and ordered the shutters put
up. Mr, Richards furnished the neces
sary 60 and will bo given an oppor
tunity to prove Mr. Manning's position

pleased with the work of the police.

satisfy their thirst, but the saloonmen
refused to selL When midnight came
only about 60 per cent of the aaloona

Where Thirst Was Slacked.
It was In th butlvin towns lust over
the county line where the hearts of the
thirsty were made glad. At Oregon
City, Mllwaukie, Estacada, -Vancouver
and numerous other villa ires 'unnaral-
leled numbers of Portland visitors were
entertained. At Mllwaukie the guests
In several Instances Insulted women and
girls on the streets and It Is very prob
able that the half lid of that town will
be extended to full nronortlona In self-
defense.
Altogether, the Manning crusade was
success and It la expected that there
will be no future difficulty m inforc
ing the provisions of the Sunday clos
ing law.. '

This Is the first log raft to be towed
- south this summer, but It will likely
be followed' by several more, since It
liaa now been practically proved that

weather. One large raft of piling be-
longing to the Robertson Raft company

and ' none of the piling was ever recov
tred. For several weeks they proved a
serious menace to navigation, although
the coaaters managed to avoid dam
a pre.'' A close lookout had to be kept

far out to sea out of the course of the
coasters. It will take the Dauntless
all of a week to reach her destination.

received, one from-the Columbia Con
tract company and the other from the
Puget Sound Brida-e at Dredainr com
pany. ' The Columbia Contract company.

tons of rock at $1.12 per ton and 200,000
tone at 11.10 per ton. The Puget Sound
Bridge & Dredging company offered to
furnish the stone at $1.80 per-ton. The

doubtedly be accepted, since It is the

Viola Allen In "Twelfth Night,"
Viola Allen comes to the Heillg, ap
pearing as Viola in Shakespeare's com
edy, "Twelfth Night" ; Shakespeare
seems to have devised this comedy with
the idea of acenlo splendor and every
oportunlty is said to have been taken
by Miss Allen to provide an elegant and
artlstio . setting. Miss Allen is sur
rounded by an exceptionally fine com
pany. Tomorrow night Miss Allen will

centers of eastern Oregon and Idaho.
Mr. Barrett is an experienced mining
specialist, having spent a numberof
years In the Transvaal mining district
of South Africa. He Is now in-charge
of the department of mines and mining
