Some Idea of the variety of SPEND MILLIONS OH COAST LINE As Result of Honda Disaster Southern Pacific to Over haul Roadbed. (Journal Special Service.) Los Angeles, June 12. The Southern Pacific has begun a general overhauling of Ha coast line of nearly 500 miles and will make repairs and Improvements ' Costing $2,000,000, according to reports here. . This action la the result of the Ehrlner train horror at Honda and many otber wrecks, possibly caused by weak ened or Imperfect track. Four months will be required to do the work, 'which Is to be thorough from one end to the other. Officials say that j to the severe weather of the past winter and the early spring the line was In excellent shape. Rain storms that raged all along the coast weak ened the roadbed in exposed places and caused no end of trouble. 1 One feature of the work is the reducing of curves and the substitution of steel, stone and cement bridges over the small streams for the old wooden structures. 'Mas sive steel shields will be constructed for cutting off freshets down mountain aides. Represents Astoria Banks. Astoria, Or, June 12. C. R. Mr. Morgan opposed It vig orously, and at the end of his speech Senator Hoar sarcastically Inquired: Throet and Parry. "What do the people of Alabama know about codfish, anyway T" "So much," replied Senator Morgan, quickly and with the keenest of smiles, "that If the senator from Massachusetts should throw a codflshr Into a 10-acre field of people In Alabama it would disperse them to a man at once." They tell to this day In Alabama this story to Illustrate Mr. Morcan'a abllttv as an advocate: A negro of well-known thlevlnr nro- cllvlties was on trial for stealing a j mule. There is a smaller .... percentage of failure in coal mine investments than in any other mining venture that can be named. Reversely stated, this means that you stand a greater chance of success, when you place your . money, large or small, in a coal mine than you do in any other "Investment you can make. An investment made today in the stock of the Consumers Coal Company, $10.00 per share, is the most rapid road to legitimate success than any other stock pur- chase you can make on the entire Pacific coast. There are a mul titude of reasons. Here are a few? A Real Coal Mine at Portland's Threshold " The Cheapest Kind of Transportation to a Big Market 1 A Demand That Cannot Be Satisfied With a Dozen Coal Mines The steamboat Kellogg has been chartered by us for a freerexcursion next Sunday. Returning, the party will walk oyer the tramway grade to the river, demonstrating the ideal shipping facilities.
