The meeting was attended by Charlea S. Fee, traffic passenger agent of the Southern' Pacific at San Francisco; Mr. ' Gardiman, assistant to Mr. tea; William McMurray, representing the Intereata .tt tha O. R. & n.; jonn . dcou, --' Blatant to Mr. McMurray; A, D. Charle ' : ton, general passenger agent of the Northern Pacific: Q. W. Kraser and Charles Dick, repreaentlng the Trav eling Men's Protective association, and State Railroad Commissioners T. K. Campbell and Clvde B. Altcheson. . Would Abolish Scrlb. The abolition of the scris system which requires the purchaae of tickets ' and the only advantage of which la a email rebate variously computed. Is de manded by the business men who want the Interchangeable mileage book now in ' uae on some railroads. The railroad men on the other hand assert that the sertp system Is the only one In use whereby the railroads are safeguarded at ail. At the request of the railroad men 10 days additional consideration were given them - by. the commercial travelers. ' ' Teaterdays conference was the second held on this Question, the first having taken place on May JO. At thaf time . tha traveling- men asked for J-cent per mile rate on a B.OOO-mlla book, or a 2H-cent per mile rate on a 1,000-mile book. In lieu of the present scrip book. which is sold for 90 per 3.000 miles and " which orovldes for a refund to the ex tent of 114.50. .. At the meetinr resterday the travel ing men waived their demands for a 2-cenf rrtnlle rate but Insisted on an j interchangeable mileage book 11 mey : had to pay 3 cents a mile for It. The scrip book is only an exchange medium . used instead of cash to buy tickets. Traveling men do not like the scrip book because they have to take their place In the Una at the ticket window nnd pass through a lot of. red tape both at the window and on tha train and this takea up much of their time. When the book has , been exhausted the railroad com pany estimates the rebate and the trav- , ellng man must accept This Is another .point of much tenderness ; as it Is claimed that the estimates are not al ways fair. There are several minor objections to the scrip book. ' , Roads Ask Protection. On the other hand the railroad men ' declare that they are not protected by the Interchangeable mileage system. In fact it developed yesterday that an av erage of 10 per cent of th? mileage sold was never turned in by ,' conductors. - Should one company sihl a mileage book , And It !were used -. mostly on another company's line, the company selling the - ticket has a perceptible advantage, since never Wore than 90 per cent of the mileage sold Is reported taken up by " conductors ' The mileage taken on the train affords the only means of getting at an adjustment of the refund due the 1 company on whose road tha ticket was mostly used. ; And this is considered .... too loose a method by the railroads. The discussion at . times approached ' dangerously near the bounds of polite ness on account of the persistency of '. the two parties. - The railroad commls sion was present Only In an advisory capacity and to aid if possible In an amicable adjustment of the difficulties " The only concession, that the railroads would make was to agree to sell a 1,000- , mile scrip book for (30 Instead of the ? 8,000-mile book for $90. It Is quite likely, should no agreement . ba reached at the next meeting, that the traveling, men's organisations will in- ; . voke the initiative. That Was given as ' the opinion of Commissioner Aitcheson yesterday, after the meeting. They are v a strong organization and could affect ; results In that way according to the railroad ' commissioners. The Wiscon sin commission mado a very thorough - Investigation of, the question under the 1 jruidanee of the now Senator LaFoIlette and their report makes quite a sliable volume of technical railroading. I am spending $22,000 in order to advertise "Golden Grain Granules," the pure rich cereal health-coffee, which is recognized as-the standard of perfection. If properly cocked it has the peculiar flavor of 45-cent Mocha and Java. It is the young folks' delight it builds them up, it strengthens them and they just love this drink as much as grown-up people. I want the young folks to have their share of pleasure as vell as health, and that is one reason why I make this offer through the columns of The Journal, which reaches thousands, of homes in the northwest Prizes 'will be awarded July ""2nd and the money shall be mailed the same day The amounts given will range from 10c to $5.00 Every child will get a prize Any child from Six to Sixteen years of age,, can take part in this Contest, with the exception of boys who smoke cigarettes. (Boys who smoke cigarettes do not care for their health and I haye no time nor money for them.) In awarding the prizes I shall not take the spelling into consideration, as I presume the parents will in many cases elp making up the letters, but the age of the child, the handwriting and the childish logic will have weight in judging the merit of every letter. , ' I HEBE'S A WAY TO SAVE i ' D0CT0K BILLS I CATTLE HUSTLERS .AT LAKEVIEW CONVICTED Warner Valley Livestock Association Prosecutes Successfully Two " Stealci-s of Beeves. Much Is printed nowadays about bid families. Dr. William J. McCrann ofj Omaha, Nebraska:'1s the father of one of these, much-read-about families. Here ; i is what he says: "As the . father of 13 children I "cer-! talnly know something' about your! great medicine, and aside from my own ! family experience, I have, in my years of practice, found' Castorla a popular and efficient remedy in almost every ! home." Charles H. Pleteher has received him- i dreds of letters from prominent physi- j clans who have the same esteem for Castorla that Dr. McCrann has. Not only do these physicians say they uae j Castorla in their own families, but they preserve u ror their putlents. First of all It Is a vegetable preparation which asBimilate the food and regulates the stomach and bowels. After eatlntr comes sleeping, and Castorla looks out for that too. It allays feverishness and prevents loss of sleep-, and this absolutely without the use of opium, morphine or other baneful narcotic. MedlCal Journals are reluctant to dis cuss proprietary medicines.
