We are not grouchy or stingy any way to suit you. With a fine lady's suit you can get, enough of pictures to cover your walls see? and save wallpaper. Mr. Burt paints them in our win dow. SJpoll around and see him do 'one in 7 minutes. He's the limit ght ';- Long time since I jotted down my ideas In the papers about one year -or since I wrote you a newspaper letter Yes, about a , year. I have been very busy with some work" the past year. Yes, I say work. I don't consider writing of our elegant store, methods, equipment and good's much work. I guess you think I have been busy. Haven't heard me say anything. I couldn't help it. There's ' a limit to every man's capacity. ; I struck my limit the past year, fit wasn't because. I didn't want to write you. I like to talk to you through the "ad" like to tell you what I'am doing have done expect to do and how I am going to do it. When X tell you of this I think you believe me.' At least I have reasons to think you do, as you have patronized me liberally that is good evidence. I take it - things were as I represented. ' I have heard no grumbles. I hate kicks most any -one does. But most any one is not ready at any cost ' to patiently listen to the kicks then dig into their pockets, if necessary, to satisfy the complainer. But I have, do and will. X want y no dissatisfied ones. . Employes can't stay with me and continue to offend my customers employes know this. They like and thank ' me, for it does away with partiality. . But I am digressing. You want to know what I've been doing the past year. :TU sum It up briefly then particularize. , I've been organizing laying the foundation, equipping and fitting up an institution, a plant, immense in proportions,' approaching perfection in equipment, a necessity in usefulness, an ornament to the city in point of beauty; one of the sights of Portland and a concern every citizen may well be proud of. That's what I've been doing. Yet it is not yet fully completed. ' But as It stands today, it Is pronounced in m'anyYespects as not having Its equal in the United States. It's not all for J. M. A. It's not 'all my work. It'a far from all my means that has effected this magnificent institution. Have loyal, competent employes, gen erous, trusting financial help; many of them of small means, but with faith in my ability to bring forth this successful consummation. But I have large Interests in it let me tell you how much it is. It is my business honor and reputation my work, thought and ef fort for about six years what' little means I have. But It has been established mostly by the help and means of others; and, reader, whenever you hear the tongue of slander, reproach, falsehood, speak, it is from jealousy and fear, and is talking against you and the best interests of our city, and this one of the sights of Portland. Now, 111 particularize give you an idea of the many additions and expansions of this once small concern. I still have the Gentlemen's Tailoring Department Why, I need the tailors to make and fit ' the ladies' coats and jackets. Besides, I need the real, genuine tailor woolens to make ladies' wear of. As complete a factory as there is west of Chicago is being installed will employe about .75 to 100 people. Will you help support that are you proud of that? Portland has none. YoU have generously supported my little old plant In the past. I trust you will this larger one. I have organized, collected and gathered together the most extensive and efficient force Jto alter, fit and manufacture ladies' garments that ever worked In this city. ' , '''. ... ,, A great many of the best of the tailoring help of this concern I have secured, and more to come, to our large, spacious sewing rooms as soon as fully completed. Interested parties will please take notice and prepare to fill vacancies, as this big factory must be . equipped with help the day it Is fully completed. As my methods do not cause "lay offs" in dull seasons and are fully appreciated by .all, I have added many new lines to this stock. Tomorrow I am going to let you know what they are. In a very effective way, too, I am going to show you the effectiveness of my methods of buying goods. You will hardly believe your eyes. I am going to do it quick that is, let you know what I now carry in addition to the old lines let you know m a way you won't forget and will thank me.' J. M. ACHESON, Manager Light of Portland Store.
