UNION MEN EXPECT
TO ELECT HENDERSON
Labor Party Will Center Efforts
1 on Councilman From the -First
Ward.
-Union labor is hopeful of -electing
Robert Henderson to the council from
the first ward and M. Q. Allen aa coun
cilman at large. At a meeting held last
night plans tor active participation in
the campaign were formed and a com
mittee with J. I Ledwldge as chairman
and E. Raddlng as secretary was elected.
This present effort on th part of the
Union Labor party la the first sttempt
ever made in Portland to put a strictly
labor ticket In the field.. The party has
no expectation of electing the head of
ficea of the ticket, but hopes to lay the
foundation for a permanent and power
ful political organisation. ,
Considerable excitement was stirred
up at the meeting of the Federated
Trade Council last night by the state
ment of bartender to the effect that
his employer had requested blm to vote
for Devlin as against Charlea Kelly, the
labor candidate for mayor. W. K.
Pltschke, secretary of the Oregon Feder
ation of Labor, took exception to the
request and denounced the attempt to
create dissatisfaction in the labor ranks.
He contended that for the delegate to
accede to the demands of his employer
would not be loyal to his- union princi
ples and held that no man bad a right
to intimidate his employ In th choice
of his ballot. s
An amendment was proposed to the
constitution - of - the Federated - Trades
council providing for the admission of
newspaper men to the meetings of th
council. v- vi-v . v.'
