tion of the Masamas on their fourteenth
annuel outing this summer. They will
leer Portland July 15. returning July
1$. The outing committee will, laaue

. The club has estended the usual in
vitation to friends and prospeeUre mem
bers to ' Join In the pleesures- of the
annual euting. It Is to be essentially
a eamplng trip and all who go will be
expected to walk. - , '
I. J. Hicks, a member of the Outing
committee, and a companion made the
ascent to the top of the pinnacle of
Mount Jefferson In the summer of 110.
He has kubmltted to the Masamas a de

"Arriving at Detroit, Oregon, at 11:11
p. m. Tuesday, July It. one and one
half hours will be devoted to lunch and
change of wearing apparsl; then the
tart will be mads on- the prettenbueh
trail, and a distance of six miles will
be traveled to a camp on the banks of
the Breitenbush river." he said In his
report. "The party will leave on Wed
nesday at a. ra., arriving at Breiten
bush Hot Springs at 10:10. In the aft
ernoon a tramp of six mUes will be
made over the Lemltl-Mount Hood gov
ernment trail to the point where this
trail crosses an old Indian trefl, run
ning from Mount Jefferson to Elk lake.

through which flows a branch of the
Breitenbush rivers then after a steady
climb of about 1.100 , feet we pass
through a gap In the mountains at an
elevation 'of about 8.000 feet Here we
obtain our first view of Mount Jeffer
son. For a distance of a mile or more
we freaueatlv find 'our way apparently
blocked by a deep ehaem or a high wall
of rock, but always find that the In
dians have been there before and we
hunt ferthetr- trail which has. In some
difficult places, been nearly obliterated
by time, tare Indeed Is the white man
who has been here, -it is quite prone Die
that not more than a halt doeen white
men have ever made this trip. ,y

' "After winding In and out, np and
down, and around various steep decliv
ities, we unexpectedly find ourselves in
the Hanging valley. Messrs. Edmond
C Glltiier and ' Lorlng R. Adams of
Port land, camped , in this valley one
night In the. year 1108. while complet
ing a circle around Mount Jefferson.
They called 4t the Hanging valley, on
account of the precipitous canyons at
either end, some 1.300 feet deep, . and
en aocount of Its alUtude, which la over
5.000 feet. '
. "The ascent of the Mountain will be
made after- several "days of camp life,
-which will allow every one to get rested
and In condition. Tbet outing commit
tee has decided to ascend the mountain
from the northwest, i Ths ascent from
the south would necessitate a dangerous
crossing underneath the pinnacle be
fore the summit could be reached. The
climb- will he over disintegrated lava,
with many cliffs and walla of rock and
some snow and Ice. , Any one with
"plenty of perseverance can accomplish
the feat and get to the top of the pin
nacle. . The ascent from - the hanging
valley to the summit 'was mads In six
and one half hours and ths descent In
three hours." . - . -

It 'Is announced that the , Exposition
rink will close the present season about
the middle of May and according to
present current reports It will close Its
doors permanently. . This comes , as a
warning that those who enjoy roller
skating under Its- finest advantages
should embrace the remaining weeks to
