CEMENT BRICK IS SUBJECT OF A DEBATE Building Inspector Spencer Draws Up Ordinance, and Man ufacturers Want It Changed. . Tha council eommltea an health anrl police learned a great deal about, the! construction of big buildings yester day when It took up for consideration the ordinance requiring concrete bricks to contain to per cent of ellica and not more than 1H per cent of lime, and all to be mixed through an approved mixer. Building Inspector Spencer, who pro posed the. ordinance, waa praaant to defend it, L. M. Van'AJatine and H. P. Palmer, of tha Cement Composite Preeeed Brick company, and Joaeph M. Fy, of tha Cement Produots company, were ths speakers for tha opposition. The cement brick manufacturers ob jected to a provision of tha Ordinance whloh permitted them to furnleh their brick for facing purpoeea only. They said they could make such brick at a coat to tha buyer of iron) tlo to 121 per 1,400, while tha ordinary burnt rreased brick would cost 848 to 110 per .008. Tha brick they could turn out, they said, was fitted aa equally for body aa for facing purposes. Tha re marks they made led epectatore to be lieve that tha burnt pressed briek man ufacturera would not Ilka to see them go Into business. They hava their plants ready now. they said. and they would um out brick at once If the council would specify tha kind of brick to be required la tha conatructlon of build ings. Mr. Spencer said ha had prepared the ordinance with a view to ohtAlnlng the best quality of concrete brlca.
