' Grand avenue will also be im proved from Sullivan's gulch to Haw- thorne avenue, so that nest fall the eaat - side should have little to handicap It. East Stark will be Improved at once, and if as far as the city limits. 1n tha opinion of ell east aide bualnesa men, It will be tha important thoroughfare of East Portland, elaoe It haa an eaay grade and 4a the natural road to tha city from all the adjacent . country to the eaat. The east aide doea not want thla street to be obatruoted by a street ear Una, although Its advantage In that respect ara evident. Other ahorter streets ara needing Im provement, one of which la the stretch of thoroughfare on Belmont, between Easi Third street and Union avenue. A contract for this Improvement haa been let to Whitney L. Boise, the time limit of which expired November to. with nothing done to the street The con tract waa flrat let to other persons, but Mr. Bolae aecured the contract at a much lower price since and there ' the matter haa rested. . The Montgomery gulch fill, which has laid under a similar delay, ia to be expedited at once. ' The Psclflo Bridge company obtained thia contract, but failed to do anything until recently, when the contract waa relet to Bchnell ft Co.. eon tractors outside the city, and the new Arm ,1a' making preparations to prosecute the work Immediately. The high haak-ott-Mlaalaalppl, avenue, be-J tween Goldsmith and Huaseu streets, will furnish a considerable aupply of dirt for the ML . - The contract for the, Improvement of Eaat Sixth street, from East Oak to Everett, will be let soon, which will mean another big help. A contract has already been awarded to the Pacific Bridge company for the fill on Eaat Sixth, between Oek and Washington, and as soon aa the fill at Stephen's gulch Is- completed the etreet will be Improved south to Ellsworth street When all thla work haa finally been brought to a.flnlah the Important work will all have been accomplished.
