the horrible crime.

When the corpse was discovered It was

wealthy rancher of his life had com
' mltted the most brutal of murders. The
eyes were gouged out, the face hacked
with a knife, and the flesh of the body
- literally torn f rom ih bones.
Some days later. Alex Wlddowaon, a
saloonman of Fine, was arrested for the
crime and is now held in the county
Jail. , The reason for suspecting Wid-
dowson of the aeea is unasmgnea, me
greatest secrecy veiling the movements
of the prosecution.
' People of Pine and the f alley . in
which the town la located are almost
unanimous In the expression of their
belief In the Innocence of the man who
was Incarcerated for the murder, and
that It was when goaded' by these that
the aged father of the murdered man is
.quoted as having sold:

The appointment of Henry Moody as
.deputy sheriff, followed by his depart
re for Pine, is taken, to Indicate that
lie has definite elues of damaging char
acter, and that, armed with official au
thortty, he can work at greater ad van

There are current rumors that a well
known woman of Pine 'valley is impll
eated in the case, but these cannot be
oonflrmed by those interested, and it is
with the greatest interest that the trial
of Wlddowson,. which . is to occur. In

After he had accumulated a large

rested as disorderly and then It was
discovered that he had cut open three
valises at the station, and in robbing
them of their contenta had found) the
check with which he had bunkoed the
