The same company announced 1 this
mornlna that It had chartered three
other sraln earners to load en the sound
for the United Kingdom. Theee are the
British ships Balmoral, Scottish Looks
and French bark ' Fortevlot. All ot
them were taken et the union rate of
zsa Id. and will begin receiving oargoes
as Boon as they can be placed in shape.
These are the first grain charters that
haa been, e fretted -for a.lmoatra, Tnorrth.
Had there been a greater quantity oi
wheat at the Portland docks It la prob
able that a number of vessels would
have been supplied with cargoes here.
If the grain had been available it la cer
tain the David d' Angers would have

the railroads to bring it to market.
Sine the chartering of grain vessels

that several other- ahlps lying "Idle" at
Portland will be taken soon. Among

a trip to Corvallla, where he went to
make an inveatlgatlon. A short - dis
tance above that town, he 'says, about
one - third of . the volume of water Is
going . through an old slough. After
traversing a distance -of eight milea It
again reenters the main stream. . It is
probable that a dan - will have to be
built. Mr. . Ogden ,says that nothing
will be don about the matter at this
time, as the government haa no funds.;

river. It is feared,, will prove annoying

Now a hundred mstches can be bought
