Miss Mary Montgomery, president of the Portland league, spoke yesterday before the Unitarian alliance, endeav oring to create e 'wider Interest in the work. Several. sOew . members were sidded to the list and a number of others signified their Intention of joining. Mlsa Montgomery, - in. addressing the meeting, said that their first purpose now is to encourage the use of labeled goods, showing that they were made tinder clean and healthful conditions. The league proposes to create a demand for these articles so that the trouble will be worth while. ':.". Agitation, hae started about the o'clock closing every night of the week. There is a little division of opinion about It, but at yesterday's meeting and at the last meeting of the league all were in favor of It.. One of the next steps of the league will be to make out a white list of retail houses conforming to the league's stan dard of a fair bouse. , New Tork has such a list published. A committee will soon visit the stores, consulting the em ployes and employers alike to get a consensus of opinion on what is a fair store.. C Chapman and Dr. Luena Johnson.
