The total of the tax money to be raised In the entire county cannot now be even approximated. The state must yet re ceive reports from the counties, before It can decide what a hall be the state tax. and the school dlst rlcts's taxes must yet 'be figured. However, the increase In valuation being greater in proportion than the decrease In the mlllage tax lm posed will operate to compel the prop erty ownera to pay more money Into the treasury than they have paid this year. The tax figures for the coming year are mostly estlmatea, although the city tax has been determined, the ordinance adopted for that purpose naming 9.626 or ' mills as the levy. This will raise during the coming year, on a valuation of 860,898,606. the sum OI 4S,sys.usl against 3437,910.99 this year.- on a valuation of 346.084,634, or an Increase In the city taxes of 361.988. 09. The valuation for the 1901 assess ment would have been higher. In all probability, had It not been that the city councilmen would not give as surance that .If the valuation was raised they would not Impose the same num ber of mills as have been Imposed hitherto, thus increeslng immensely tne amount of tax paid by the people. The valuation of the entire county In the 190S assessment waa 861.688.300. and In the '1904 asseesment, 856.433.W7, an Increase of 35.390.727. while the decrease In- the mlllage Imposed Is 1.375. Of the money oollected In this county 8382.57.66 waa paid this year 'as the state tax. Multnomah county s share re Ing a trine more man si per ceni oi the entire taxes collected for the state of Oregon. To prevent delay In getting the tax rolla In shape for extension, county Clerk Fields has written to Secretary of State Dunbar and will take other steps to expedite matters. If possible. It will be absolutely necessary to receive rrom the secretary of state the levy of etate taxes, before the county orricers may proceed to determine exactly what sum must be paid here, and the state must receive from the various counties the reports of thelr expenditures for the yar. In order that the averaging of the prevloue five-year expenses may be made up. as the hesis or tne miuage to be imposed. At the very beet extension of the rolls will be delayed to a date much later than usual, and It will Occasion considerable Inconvenience. ' A tastf of the laborious work of figuring to five and six decimal pointa was had today. In making estimates of the taxes for the coming year. The city's tax of 9H mills, which, expreseed In decimals Is 9.K25. made the estimate for the entire tax 3ft. 625 mills, so thst.
