, AVID GARRICK." the play.
and Sir Charlee Wyndham,
the actor, have come to be
pretty nearly one and In
separable. For two years at time Sir
Charlee haa acted the play, and the his
tory of the play la the history of his
success. Woven In and out of this his
tory and In a large measure a part of It
appear the personal characteristics of
the king and quean of England, a csar
of all the Hussies and many other dis
tinguished people of many nations.
ft is a history of telling of which Sir
Charles Is wont to revel In. and none can
blame him. for It ia replete with Inter
esting details aad the doings of men
who control great destinies
Sir Charles la now In America again,
after an absence of fourteen years.
In appearance Sir Charles la the typical
KngHsh actor-manager. Re ia rather
slight, of medium height, with strongly
marked feature end a determined
mouth. His eyes ara blue and merry;
his forehead, or owned with waring iron
gray hair, that of a pott or an artist;
but his chin ia severe and businesslike,
and the lines of his mouth are not to be
treated lightly. The upper part of his
face shows the artist and litterateur; tha
lower part the man of affairs and bank
books. It Is a happy combination.
Hie wide experience In many lands has
robbed htm of any distinctive KngHsh
accent. He could easily pass for either
a New York lawyer, a Boston author, a
Chicago speculator or a Ban Francisco
Clergyman.
Few. however, would pick him out for
an actor. Hg haa hone of the manner
Isms of ths craft either In speech or
gesture. His words are softly spoken
and his manner la that of the refined
man who haa never gotten over being
a good fellow. His clothes are not ec
centric, but he does smoke cigarettes
and many of them.
He does not live up to the greaae paint
of the stage, but to the club and the
drawing room.
"King Edward haa made the English
slsge what It la today. Ha made It
fashionable and made It nwpeotad." said
Sir Charles In a recent Interview In New
York. Until ha did that tha English
stage was in a deplorable oondltlon. No
body paid any attention to it aad It was
rather shunned by society. No attempt
was made at artistic or correct mount
ing. The scenery and tha 'props' ware
makeshifts. If wa wanted a drawing
room scene there waa nobody to give it
to us The managers did not pare, and
it seemed to make no difference whether
It was right or not. Etiquette aa than
seen on the stage waa usually a pretty
shoddy Imitation of tha real thing. Tha
stage managers and producers were a
very different set of people from those
who make the beautiful and elaborate
productions today.
It was King Edward's patronage and
Interest entirely that wrought the
change.
"Then we gave 'David Oarrtck' at
Windsor Caatle by the king's Invitation,
when he treated us most kindly After
the play the queen came up to mo aa
we were gathering to go to supper and
said:
Dear old David Garriek! How I do

"But the king said: 'Wfndhsm. when
are you going to get a new play? I have

It or appreciation of any kind, still when
I went off after the first act and heard
that silence, for there are -some silences
so deep they are audible. It came to me
like a shock. The sensation see.ned to
paralyse me. Never on the stage did
I experience ao unpleasant and uncanny
a feeling aa that silence produced where
applause had always been. The other
actors were similarly affected.- It nearly
broke up the performance.
"Two other events of interest In the
story of 'David Garriek' are when we
went to Germany and Busala with It. I
waa able to speak Oerman with a little
brushing up and fortunately Miss Mary
Moore had learned the language aa a
schoolgirl without ever studying It.
. "When the Berlin manager read the
translation he was In despair, for 'David
Garriek' does not read well at all. It la
too simple, and would dlagust any one
who judged it from that atandpolnt 80
thla manager made a public apology for
It tn advance. That was rather disheart
ening; out, to make it worse, on the op
ening night a one act "curtain raiser'
by the German company waa hlaaed off
the stage.
"Imagine my feelings as I, stood In
the wings when that occurred and heard
some one In the stalls aay. "Now wo
will get the English clowns. Fortu
nately. Miaa Moore was In her room and
did not know of the bad start. How
ever, by the and of the second art we
bad won them over and they treated ua
moat kindly. The critics sent back a
Joint note of congratulation.
"So happily did the Oerman venture
turn out that wo went to St. Peters
burg and played "David Garriek' In the
German theatre there; then to Moscow
and back t St. Petersburg by the csar's
command tn give a little English play
The Happy Pair.'
"When the csar wishes to see a play
ha eenda a command to have It given.
and it Is accordingly put on without any
announcement whatever. The first inti
mation you have of the csar's visit to
a theatre is when his cook arrives with
his diahes and pots to prepare tha tea
and cakes for the royal party. The
csar was exceedingly pleasant to us
Thst waa the father of the present
csar. When I had returned to England
he sent me this ring, a plain gold band,
in which are set a medium slaad ruby
and a diamond.
"Strange to aay I refused It and went
it back. I thought It wa a joke.
"A little while before a friend and I
arranged a practical Joke on another
actor to make him believe that the
csar had sent him a Jewel. We had the
poor fellow bothered out of hla wita
and kept It up for Weeks. When t hie
came I thought b waa surely paying
us back. I was obliged to offer all
sorts of apologies to the Russian am
basssdor when I learned of my error."

"Don't talk to me about the recipes
In that magaalne." ssld Mrs. Lane, with
great energy. "Wasn't that tha very
magsslne that advlaed me to put on that

them in the spring. I remember."
"Well, and what happened T' aaked
Mrs. Lane, with rising wrath
