SEVENTEEN TONS OF ORE FOR EXHIBIT AT THE FAIR (Special Dispatch to The Journal ) Cottage Grove, Or., Nov. It. D. H. Weyant, state commission representa tive, gathering minerals for the Lewis snd Clark fair, la here for the purpose of receiving and forwarding the dona tion of Bohemia oies which have been brought together through the efforts of the Mine Owners' aaoclatlon of the dis trict. About seven tons of the typical orea of the camp have been secured and delivered at the track of the Oregon Southern railroad. Mr. Weyant will now take charge of It and will prop erly label, classify and ship It to the ex position for storage until the state min eral building Is completed. This mag nificent lot of quarts samples from Bo hemia has been gathered this early be cause the roads and trails are In good condition and the reverse might be the case fn the early spring. These ores are taken from every section of the district over an area of 10 square miles. An other shipment will be forwarded in March from the claims at the base of the hills. Mr.' Weyant says Bohemia will have the first shipment for the fair. TWO flEw MILLS WILL MAKE BOHEMIA HAPPY "Manager C C. Mathews expects to begin milling with the SO-stamp plant recently finished, some time this month," said W. B Hartley this morning, when referring to the progress of work In Bohemia. "The Oregon Securities man ager .said to me a ahort time ago that he was about ready to begin operatlona along this line. The drift on the Ex celsior vein is being driven rapidly, two shifts with a powerful drill being at work there, while the face of the big crosscut is going Into the mountain with atlll greater speed. "Miners state that the 10-stamp plant on the Vesuvius Is running full time, with two shifts, and that tha new ae rial tram Is delivering ore more rapidly than It ran be reduced. When these new mills are pounding out gold, Bohemia will begin to attract more attention, end another season will find the camp in very prosperous cerndltlori." Manager Fred Smith of the Snow Creek mines In the Greenhorn district, stated yesterday that he was continuing deep sinking, and had the shaft now down 14S feet from the collar, and Intends to sink SO feet further before beginning;- to drift on the vein. Mr. Smith baa a new title, having been appointed rogd supervisor of district No: IS, and la conference with the county court yesterday ar ranged for completing the road from Tipton to Greenhorn, which will shorten the dletance and leesen the grades, mak ing transportation to the railroads much easier and cheaper. GOOD OSS AT A strike of more than usual Impor tance has been made in the ML Pitt mining property, near Grants Paae, ac cording to the statement of K. C. Schaefler, a miner,, who came from Jose phine county yeaterday. The property la owned by the Mt. Pitt Hydraulic & Quarts Mining company, of which A. C. Hotter Is manager and superintendent, and B. House of Portland la secretary. The quarts portion consists of two claims Just across the county line in Jackson county, on Bummer gulch. A cross-cut was drlvsn about 0 feet to catch the vein, and drifts were extended In both directions. Mr. Schaefler says that good ore waa encountered In both the north and south tunnels. In one small vein specimens showlhg free golu to the naked eye. Another vein was cut In one of the tunnels, which the miner said he understood was good rock. examtktmo rom s Engineer W. W. T .Keady stated thla morning that the present shaft was on a good vein, but that beyond the scene of work and nearer the I X. I., there waa an Intersection of two vein systems, which might be chosen for the new work thst will be begun this winter. Upon Mr. Klmer's report will depend the place for continuing development. The 16th annual meeting of the National Associa tion of Railroad commissioners opened at the city hall In this city today, practi cally every state of the union being rep resented. In addition there are present many members of the interstate, com merce commission. The" convention will be In session three days. The following matters will be taken up in the order mentioned: Grade crossings, classifica tion of operating and construction ex penses of electric and ateam railways, railroad taxes, and plans- for ascertaining fair valuation' of railroad property, uni form classification and simplification of tariff sheets, railroad statistics, legisla tion, safety appliances and block signals, rates and ratemaktng and delays attend ant on enforcing orders of railway com missions. in conjunction with the meeting there Is being held a convention of the South ern Railway, Land & Industrial Agents' association.
