his route, three of them right on the
trail he traveled.
Because she refused to marry him.
Oeorge Boyer shot Marie Benches,
wounding her with four bullets, but not
fatally, then killed himself at the home
of Mrs. 8. (i. Ramsey. 470 Taylor street,
at 6:30 o'clock last night. Miss Sanchez
waa -shot three times through the lungs
and once through the right hand, but
Dr. Sanford Whiting, who ts attending
her at Good Samaritan hospital, said
this morning that unless, some un
expected complication set in she would
recover.
Miss Sanchez is a' Mexican brought
here from Mexico City by Mrs. Ramsey
as a companion and housekeeper. Boyer
Is Mrs. Ramsey's brother and was 18
years old. He waa a miner and reached
the city yesterday morning from Wal
lace, Ida. where his interests were. On
a previous visit he had met the girl and
fallen in love with her.
Boyer went to the residence of his
sister fully expecting to receive from
his" sweetheart a warm welcome. She
greeted him coldly. During his absence
It la said she had transferred her affec
tions to another. He spoke of the mat
ter to his sister, saying he desired to
marry the girl. When advised to wslt
he said he could .not do so; that he loved
the girl too deeply ana could not consent
to return to Wallace without her. He
waa advised by his sister that perhaps
In a few days the girl would change her
mind and consent to the marriage.
Boyer then replied that he had nothing
to live for, and threatened to commit
sulolde.
At 6 o'clock Mrs. Ramsey left the
house for a visit. Thirty minutes later
Boyer met Miss Sanches In the parlor
and renewed his pleadings for sn early
marriage. He drew a revolver and be
gan firing at close range. The first three
bullets entered his victim's lungs and
the fourth pierced her right hand, which
she threw to her breast involuntarily.
Miss Sanchez then fWd from her as
sailant. She rushed out the front door
snd to the home of C. P. Hare. 448 Tay
lor street, where she sought refuge
Dr. Whiting waa summoned and cared
for the girl, having her removed at
once to the hospital.
After Mlas Sanches fled Boyer then
turned the weapon on himself and fired
one bullet through his right temple. He
fell to the floor and died Instantly.
Policemen Hammersley and Nelson
Investigated the case and Coroner Fin
ley took charge of Boyer's body. Mrs.
Ramsey was summoned and returned to
her home. She was almost hysterical
over the tragedy. No funeral arrange
ments have yet been made, but It is be
lieved Boyer will be buried here m a
local cemetery.
FIRE CHIEF AND HIS
AIDES ENFORCING LAW
rhlef Dave Campbell of the fire de
partment and hlsgthree battalion chiefs
are makina- a campaign among tht
larger buildings of the city, compell
ing property-owners to put in nre eo
canes snd standplpes. In all three
story buildings ladder fire escapes must
be provided, and all buildings over
three stories high must contain both
ladder Are escapes and standplpes.
Heretofore property-owners have been
very negligent In providing these. As
the city haa grown, the authorities now
see that these precautions against loss
of life In case of fire must be provided.
In the building ordinance which was
passed by the city council some time
ago there are provisions for fire es
capes in all buildings three stories or
more In height. It Is this ordinance
which Chief Campbell and his assuit
ants are now attempting to enforce.
Prooertv-owners are complying quite
generally with the ordinance and Chief
Campbell ststes that very little trouble
Is being encountered.
