Last night the pulse C every news
boy in the city wu throbbing with rap
ture, for the lade who sell papers on
the streets were royally entertained. At
v o'clock they boarded the palatial
steamer Charles R. Spencer and enjoyed
a moonlight ride many miles down the
placid Willamette and return. The
steamer was donated for the night to
the boys who gave an exourslon for the
benefit of their association. Captain
Spencer announces that he Is going to
turn the boat over to the youths once
a year for a similar purpose, and If they
want the vessel more often than that he
ays they are welcome to her. A big
feast was partaken of last alght and to
say that the future cltlxens of Portland
enjoyed themselves would be putting It
mildly.

FEARS HUSBAND
WILL KILL HER
In a complaint filed against John W.
Hsss by Beta L. Haas in the circuit
court last Monday, In- which she asks
for a divorce, is contained a story of
domestic Infelicity out of the ordinary.
She alleges that he not only beat her
and threatened her life, but followed
her here from Spokane, Wash., in order
to try to put his threat Into execution.
The maiden name of the complainant,
which ahe desires to resume, was Reta
L. Wade. She was married to Haas at
Spokane, December 1, 1101. She asserts
that shortly afterward he attacked her
on several occasions and beat her so
that ahe was made sick and miserable
most of the time. In last March, she
charges, Haas maltreated her and threat
ened her life. ;
Fearing that he would make good his
threat, she fled to Portland, the com
plaint recites, snd hss since then lived
with her mother In this city. Her hus
band is accused of following her here
and assaulting her June 13, at the same
time flourishing a razor and saying hs
would kill her.
For this offense, the complaint says,
he was arrested and June 22 was con
victed and sent to the city Jail, from
which he afterward escaped, pending the
furnishing of a bond to keep the peace.
