by Admiral Taylor, chief of the bureau
of navigation, in a letter to the officers
of the Paul Jones,' complimenting them
upon the- SDlendld showing made.
To Captain Davison considerable
credit Is due first. and principally for
the sight that he cleverly devised, and
which is of Inestimable' service in giv
ing the gunners the proper aim; and,
secondly for the careful and painstak
ing- manner In which he Instructs the
men In . his command. This sight de
vice was made on, board the Paul Jones
by her machinists, under Captain Davi
son's instructions, and experta have
pronounced It most useful. - The other
officers on the Paul Jones are Ensigns
EX H. Dodd and W. T. Conn. All three
officers are graduates of the naval acad
my at Annapolis, and held high rank
in their classes.
In the giving of trophies there was
on offered In the battleship class, one
in tn gunooat class" and one in the
torpedo boat destroyer class. - The Ore
gon carried off the .ionor In the first,
th Dolphin 'In the second, the Paul
Jones In her class. The Paul Jones, be
sldes winning all th honors In her own
class, won the trophy for th-jr-pound
