and find cheaper auarters. Most of them

a number of bouses unrented. there is
hardly a desirable one to be found in
- entire lot. and if perchance one is
found the rents are found to have been

Tor the last few weeks' an, epidemic

eases have had relapses. Finally, Dud
Icy Evans,, the county health - officer,
was sent for by Dr. Geary, the county
physician, and requested to' make an in
vestigation as regards the -, causes of

tions at the institution are in very bad

For some time an old-fashioned sewer
as been used at the ( hospital. The
cesspool became filled ' and the pipes

BROKEN CONTRACT
Suit was filed in the circuit, court yes
terday by .'T.-E. Jefferson to recover 848,-
250 from the William K. White company
on an alleged breach of contract.
The company ' does ' business in this
territory, though its home office is lo
cated at Bloomlngton.HL . Jt manufac
tures and sells' automatic drive-gates.
Jefferson had contracts for selling the I
product of the company exclusively in
certain territory, and alleges that ' the
company failed to live up to the terms
of Its agreement, causing him to lose the I
amount of money named in ; the fore-1

. According '. to ; the complaint,-: Jeffer
son had. oontraots .to sell goods la 100

California. He afterward .secured ' the
right to sell the gates In any county in

commissions. He asserts that the com-1
pany notified him on June 1 that it I
would sell no more' agencies through
him, : and -made It Impossible - for him
to carry - out the . terms of his agree
ments with men whom he had already
made arrangement with to dispose of I

Of .the money sued for, 125,000 is es-l
tlmafed as the amount which he could
have secured on future sales and
commissions, had the company not failed
to live up to Its agreement, as charged.

Brooks, both of whom were committed
to the cenitentlary at Salem for, for-1
gery, told the authorities the truth when
they asserted that saws had been smug
gled into the county Jail with which the
Inmates expected to make a break, was
obtained yesterday morning. Thirteen
saws, hidden between two boards, hol
lowed out at the edges where they were
Joined together, were ,4ound by Jailer
Jackson and sheriffs deputies, while an
other saw was discovered hidden In a I
bunk. . The last saw bore the marks of I
usage, though none of .the bars at the
Jail had been sawed. -,

The 'Utmost secrecy was maintained
by the authorities regarding their dis
covery. A rumor was in circulation yes-1
terday morning that the saws had been
found, but little credence was placed in I
the story on account of the Jail having
been searched six or seven times re
cently, with ; small ' reward. Yesterday
afternoon, however, the officials ad
mitted that the rumor was founded on
fact i . '
As a reason f of Secrecy, it Is stated,
the authorities have learned where the
contraband articles were purchased, and
expect to apprehend, the purchaser. All
dealers in hardware , in the city have I
