RENTON COAL MINES
TITLE IN LITIGATION

Seattle. June 16. Title to the Ronton
coal mines, worth millions of dollars,
is to be determined by an action In the
superior court ; brought by the heirs
of David Mauer, who settled on the land
more than half a century ago. LKlga

mines are now In .the possession of the
Renton Coal company. ''
' In 1851 Mauer crossed the plains, leav
ing his family" In ' Iowa. . He corres
ponded with the a members '., for years,
constantly promising to . bring them
westward to establish a home. He first
went to California, then came to Puget
sound, and shortly before his death in
1 17 1 took up the Renton land as a home
stead.' ' He acquired title, sold out for
11,000 without securing his. wife's slg
nature to the deed, and fof two years I
after his death the family heard noth

O. M. Rosendale, mining engineer and
metallurgist, has returned from an In
spection of the holdings of the No
halem Coal company, pn the east "side
of Necarny mountain, near the 'mouth
of the Nehalem river.' ' Mr. Rosendale
had a thrilling-experience while riding
on horseback on hi trip Out from th
mine,1 .The wind was blowing at .the
rate , of 10 miles an hour, and ths
mountain trail .bordered on steep.

height, and the roar of the ocean added
to the attendant excitement and dan
ger of the trip. . . . i
Mr. Roaendale's report on the coal de
posits was favorable and encouraging
to the owners of the. thousand-acre
field. ; The coal Is of high quality, poa
seising a high percentage of fuel units,
Dr. Emll Barton owns a 160-aore ooal
tract adjoining and the lands contain
lng coal t deposits aggregate several
thousand acres, Considerable develop
ment work has been done on the com
pany's possessions. and the veins
range from It to 41 Inches In width.
An analysis Of the coal gives the fol
lowing , component parts: Corbon. 41
per cent: hydrogen. 11.04; - oxygen.
11.71; nitrogen. 1.11;, sulphur, .11 ashes,
7.4; water, 1.11. -,),v-- , . sm
y An analysis of the ashes, after the
ooal had been burned, gave the follow
ing results: suicia, - 60.40; alumina,
11.07; Iron plroxlde, 14.40; potash,. 1.01;
lime.-11.10.
The ooal fields are about 61 miles
from Portland on a straight Mine, but
the distance would be further by the
line; of the proposed Nehalem, Tilla
mook and Portland railroad. The build
ing of this road would give Portland a
superior quality of ' coal at minimum
prices, as the haul would be a short
one. ft It is' about 160 miles by -f the
water route to Nehalem' , bay, hut It
will take a large government appropria
tion to , make the mouth of the Ne
halem safe for large vessels.
