A spirited election is being held to
day by Multnomah 'Typographical union.
The membera are voting for officers of
both the local and International organ
isations. Three candidates aeek to be
delegates to the annual convention which
meets at St. Louis In August. They are
O. W. Athey of The Journal chapel, and
Oliver Gallup and George H. Howell of
the Oregonlan.
All told there are 182 votes to be cast
James M. Lynch, the present Interna.
tional president, of Syracuse, N. Y., and
Charles E. Hawkes of Chicago, are can
didates for the chief office. Hawkes
formerly resided at San Francisco, and
haa an extensive acquaintance pn the
Pacific coast. For this reason It is be
lieved that he will make a good showing
in Portland.

at the Eastern and Western mill, the
local agents of the steam schooner
Chico had the lumber removed from her
hold, and moved her over to Montgomery
dock No. t, where she will receive a
cargo of wheat for shipment to Ban
Francisco. The wheat order came In
after the vessel had begun receiving
lumber, and aa the grain buslneea la
regarded aa being more profitable. It
waa decided to make the change. The
Chlco will take out about 500 tons of
grain, and on her next visit to this
port will probably take the same lum
ber which she started to receive this
trip.
