Gamblers' fines paid Into the city
coffers today bv the membera of the
ramblers' trust aggregated Just 170 less
than the amount Herbert W. Oowell, the
Seattle advertising man, claimed to hav
lost In three Portland gambling hells

gamblera paid lines amounting to $1.0$0,
In pursuance and by permission of
Ulnar Williams' policy. Mr. Oowell
lost 11.100 In the Portland club, Erlck
son's and at Frlts'a place. If hie state
ment made In his letter to The Journal
Is to be believed. And it is not credit
able that a man. coolly facing death,
would lie about money matters. Oowell
stated that he had lost 1700 at the
Portland club. (350 at Erickson'a and 160
st Frlts's pluce.
If Oowell had taken his money and
paid it into the city's treasury as fines
for the gamblers, the latter would have
been that much ahead of the deal and
the city would not have lost any money.
As It wss the gamblers are atlll ahead
and Oowell Is In his grave, a suicide.

backed by Mayor Williams and the po

Early Sunday morning an attempt
waa made to burglarise the river ware
house of th Salem Flouring Mills com
pany In this city. Ths night watchman
discovered the midnight prowlers on his
rounds and attempted to capture them,
but before reaching them they discov

Hooley, head of the Hooley company,
and Henry J. Lawson, who Is connected
with the .company, were arrested today
on a charge of conspiracy to defraud
John Payne of '- Windsor Castle, Vic
toria, out of moneys and securities.
Hooley' career aa a promoter was a
meteoric one. He was formerly arrested
on a similar charge and when before
the court swore that $60,000 a year was
not sufficient for him to live on.
The defense was made at a time when
he was taken Into court to answer as
to why certain Interests should . not be
turned over to satisfy creditors.
Hooley had erected a country home
