appointed a committee of three to confer

tion of Labor, which meets here on
May 5. The men appointed by the paint

Vancouver, Wash., April It. By some
unlawful means a general prisoner named
Leonard. Incarcerated In the post guard
house, procured either liquor or dope,
and laat night caused more trouble for
himself aa well as , much excitement
about the post It was while Captain
JOnochi, as officer of the day. was mak
Ing his evening Inspection of the pris
oners, at about 7:30 o'clock, that Leon
ard attempted to make hla eacape, first
by endeavoring to- aasault Captain En
ocha. He succeeded in making a break
for liberty, but waa later recaptured.
The escaping prisoner was promptly fol
lowed by a member of the guard on
duty at the guard house. Several shots
were fired at ttte prisoner, but none took
effect In endeavoring to make hla es
cape Leonard ran into a fence and, being
closely pursued, was captured before
he had time to get Over the same. He
was brought back to the guard house
with, considerable ' force- -Leonard -had
only nine daya more to complete his
term of confinement but the attempt to
assault the officer and then to get free
last night will undoubtedly lengthen his
term of imprisonment
Superior Court Busy.
Several new cases . have been filed In
the superior court one of which has Just
been tried. It is another divorce cum
and was brougm by Jennie M. Collard
against her husband. Hugh H. Collard.
The ground on which the divorce was
obtained was desertion. Mrs. Collard
claims that she came to Oregon In Aug
ust 1890. for St Paul. Minn., lor the
purpose of visiting her parents, with the.

full consent "and approval 'of her hus
band; Also, with ths understanding that
her husband- was to furnish her money to

standing the fact that during that time
he has been receiving flit per month

The next oases on the docket which
will be brought to the attention of Judge
Miller are those of the County of Clarke
agalnat O. B. Hathaway, and also against
P. Hougn and wife. Theae are eon
demnation proceedings for right of way
for .county roads, in the case of the
County against Hathaway the right of
way is sougnt tnrough certain lands
owned by him and commonly known aa
the Proulx Donation Land Claim. In
the case against P. Hough and wife, the
right of way la sought through a tract
of land designated as the C. Stroller
Donation Land Claim. The county
commissioners were unable to agree with
the parties owning these lands as to
what was considered equitable compen
sation, and has brought the action In
court to be determined by a Jury.
Another Utvoroe.
Another case filed la an action for a
divorce by Nancy O. Nicholson agalnat
Ephrlam D. Nicholson. The complaint
sets ,up the facta that tha. parties to the
suit were married in Gentry county,
Missouri. In 187S, and havs ever since
lived together aa husband and wife, but
during the last four yeara of this mar
ried existence life has bepn very un
pleasant and that the husband haa used
the wife In a cruel and Inhuman man
ner. Mrs. Nicholson also alleges thttt
her husband developed an Insanely Jeal
ous disposition, and often called her vile
names, and that during the last two
years hss deserted her entirely.
School Bntertainment.
An entertainment and social will be
given by the pupils of Providence acad
emy on Thursday evening, April 14, for
the benefit of the library fund. The
event will take place at the Academy
hall, which will be open at 7:10 p. m.

have broken-Into business -houses here
for three successive nights. . Little or
nothing was obtained the first night, but
on the second they broke- Into- the Office
saloon and atole til in cash, several
bottles of wine and a large number of
cigars. '
They alao ransacked Georare Rolhaa
ens meat shop, but found nothing of
value. Thla ahop was also robbed a
week ago, when a number of hams and
palls of lard were taken. Laat night
the Eldorado saloon was broken into and
about. 2S was -taken from a slot ma
chine.
In the last six months more burglar-
lea and holdups have been committed
here than In a year at any time hereto
fore. The reason is that there Is not
sufficient police protection to guard
against robbers.

Umatilla county contention to order, at

chairman, A. C. Haley secretary and Joe
Boott assistant secretary.
Marked features of tha convention
were the several excellent resolutions
passed, among which waa. one commend
ing District Attorney T. C Hailey for
his stand against gambling and general

Another resolution heartily commended
the Lewis and Clark exposition to be
held In Portland in 1906. although the

cans of Linn county held their county
convention yesterday, and the result
waa a complete victory of the Hermann
forces, an instructed delegation being
aent from here to the oonventlon at Sa
lem. A delegation was also sent to the
state convention Instructed to use all
honorable meana to secure the nomina
tion of Hon. J. TL Wvatt of Albany aa
circuit Judge In thla district; and a com
plete county ticket, composed of a good
class of men was placed In the field.
The convention waa on the surface
harmonious, but several times th. har
mony that had caused Infinite care and
patience to build up, was in danger of
being rudely shattered. J. C Irvine of
Albany was chairman of the convention.

Astoria, April IS. The county Demo
cratic convention will meet at Aetoria
on Saturday afternoon and, for the first
time In many years, a straignt ucaei
will be nominated. The Democrats of
Clatsop county have long employed the
name "Citizen" to designate wnas iney
called their non-partisan ticket, and un
der thla name administered frequent de
feats ta the - Republicans ttotn. in . tne
county and In the city. But the straight
outs have tired of the appellation and
have prepared for tha nomination -of a
straight ticket T"
Two considerations prompt mis ac
tion on the part of the Democrats. First,
they - are opposed to the - false name
which their organisation was given; sec
ondly, they feel that the Democratic
name ought to be employed, as this is
presidential year.
The Cltisen leader, city Attorney a.
M. Smith, has admitted that there is
now no hope of the nomination of any
but a straight ticket.
Hearst la Tavor.
Locally there la a very strong senti
ment In favor of Indorsement or the
presidential candidacy -of William Ran
dolph Hearst.
The straight Democrats are now get
ting their ticket In shape. Councilman
V. Burns and Councilman George w.
Morton are mentioned as legislative can
didates, while -Captain of Police Charles
Gammal and John Blue are mentioned
for sheriff. It Is extremely unlikely that
candidate for county clerk will be
named, as It is realised the Republican
nominee, J. C. Clinton, could not well he
beaten. Andrew Young will be renomi
nated for county commissioner, but a
candidate for assessor has not yet been
selected, nor have the Democrats de
cided Just who will be offered to make
the run for surveyor.
The Democratic committee claims that
the large increase In the population of
the city has had the effect of adding
greatly to the Democratic strength, and
they expect to carry the city by enough
to offset, the Republican advantage inthe
county. The Democrats are more en
thusiastic this year than ever before,
and will make a hard campaign.
