CASTRO BELONGS The) Journal today can state upon the authority of Manager Ely that Louis Castro has been secured for the Port land baseball team. - In his message Ely stated that he would close the deal with Hanlon today. Since the starting of the "Castro fund" in The Journal, to which the loyal fans have so generously contributed over $600, Manager Ely has been In communication, with the Brook lyn magnate in an endeavor to close the deal. Manager Ely has been so encour aged by the spontaneous and volun tary generosity of the Oregon fans that he made several efforts to secure Castro for a lower sum than . that demanded by Harlem. The fund from the start has gone steadily ahead, and this without any solicitation but an appeal to the loyalty of the fans. This morning Max Flelsch ner of this city, who has been wintering in California, after hearing of the "Cas tro fund," immediately wired $50 to The Journal. Mr. Flolschner is an ardent admirer of the national game and has done considerable for the elevation of tne game in Portland. Another contribution that was appre ciated came couched in the following words: "Dear Mr. Horan, nlease buy Mr. Castro. I am giving 60 cents that I got tor candy. Truly, BERTINA ROBINSON. P. S. If you print this, maybe some other little girls will give. Goodbye. The above letter smacks of sincerity and the 60 cents is just as welcome, coming as it does, as if the amount were $60. Another letter , enclosing $10 came from theMedford baseball club. It reads: Oregon Daily : Journal Mr. Editor: As Medford wants tne Portland Browns to be winners this year, our baseball team herein sends you $10 for the "Cas tro lund." Yours truly, MEDFORD BASEBALL CLUB, By Court Hall. A complete account of the fund will be ' published ' in tomorrow's . Journal. All sport dom seems to be discussing the Toung Corbett and Jimmy Britt fight, and, for that matter, Quite a number of staid cltJaens who will snort if accused of possessing sporting proclivities find the impending contest an enjoyable theme. There were many evidences, of the ap proach of the Important event.' At Cor bett' s Eddy street resort, where the ad vance sale of seats Is in progress, money came .pouring into the coffer of the promoters In a steady stream. In the rear rooms where Harry Corbett holds out the betting was in full blast, while at both training camps men set about their finishing aay's work with a set de termination waich betokens a fight that will be marked by bitterness and stub bornness. There Were Mumblings. In the , early morning there" were mumblings and grumblings from the Corbett faction because the Brlttltes still insisted on 10 to 6. They said that if short enders would not eohtent them selves with 10 to 8- there would be little or no money wagered on the contest . , It then developed that a few beta were) being made at 1ft to 7, and soon after that Harry Corbett received a commis sion to wager $1,000 of Toung Corbett money against $700. From that point both parties were satisfied temporarily, and during the balance' of the day the wagering continued on. a 10 to 7 basis. Those who took the Britt end seem to be' none too sure of their ground at that. They accepted odds mentioned reluc tantly and believed there will be a lull In the market unless supporters of Toung Corbett loosen their purse strings and agree to ' give 10 to or 10 to PORTLAND CL UB CA FE 130 Fifth Street, Between Washington and Alder HERMITAGE WHISKEY SCHLITZ BEER I All Leading Brands of Cigars. COLLEGIANS READY FOR BALL SEASON (Journal Special Kerr lee.) New York, March 28. College base ball for the season of. 1904 makes its debut on the athletic stage today with games between Yale and Trinity at New Haven and Princeton and the University of NeW York at Princeton. ' These con tests are, of course, but little more than practice fames ' and it will be several weeks yet before the sport is on in ear nest. The advent of real, spring weather has brought the nines out on to the dia mond in full force and at most of the big eastern colleges the teams are ready for actual play. The number of dates that have been arranged for the next few weeks indicates that a large part of the preliminary practice in preparation for the Important games of the year will be in the nature of games with weaker teams. The result of the games In which Yale and Princeton engage in to day is awaited with considerable in terest as both institutions expect to have strong nines this year. Croup instantly relieved.
