',";.;. DRY WOOD NOT EASILY FOUND SEaVXiEBS Or FO&TZITO ASS HOW TOABLB TO PILL THE DEKtAKDS XTF ETEKT 8TASOBT CLAIMS 07 8H0BT KEA8UBE. During- the pit three or four years there has been an tnormoua advance In the price of enrdwood In this- city. .These advances have been made denplte the fact that this In one of the most densely wooded sections In the' world,' and that the wood can be got to market cheaply. Thi year the prices on various grades of wood show an advance of about 1 1 a cord all around, and even at the new fig ure stood wood is hard to obtain. Wood dealers in thlst city say that it 1st-next to Impossible Tor them to grot dry wood, and it Is nearly equally as hard for them to get wood of any kind. All the wood men report they are weeks behind In their orders, and some of them do not know Whether they can fill them or not. The prices on wood as now ranging and those of a year previous show: Prices) of Wood. 1904. 1S0S. Cord. Cord. Dry fir. four-foot 14.50 $3.60 Dry fir, sawed, 12 to 16 In. . . 5.00 4.00 Oak. four-foot f.60 4.60 Oak, sawed 6.25 5.00 Ash, four-foot S.2S 4.00 Ash, sawed 6.75 4.60 Every day woodmen are compelled to tell their patrons that they are unable to supply them with wood. Some of the dealers have taken orders lately that they have not delivered for more than three weeks. "I don't know what. we are. going to do," says -s, wood dealer, "If wood .re .mains as scarce d it is now. At the present time we are more than a week behind in. our orders, , and we hardly know where to turn to get a freBh sup ply. It seems queer that such a condi tion should exist, in thla country, but it is nevertheless a fact. Every year we are forced, to pay more for the. stumpage. and, of course, the only thing we can do Is to advance the cost to the consumer." A few years ago the very best dry fir wood could be purchased In this city for f 2 a cord, and wood went begging. In those days wood dealers were thick around the Plaza blocks, and the busi ness of the city was about equally di vided among them and the regular wood yards. Now this Is all different, and only once in awhile can a country wood seller be seen in his old accustomed haunts. "Wood Is getting scarce," said onoof these men, "and we are unable to get the wood as cheap as we used to. Prices are now so high and dry wood so short that, we simply cannot pay the prices the yards are paying for stump age." . Oord. a Third Short. . Many consumers in this city have pro tested when their wood is delivered by the ysrd men, as they say Instead of being a cord, as they bought, the deliv ery man only brought two-thirds of a cord. This charge has been made very much of late, but It is denied by the dealers, who say there is nothing in It, Coal is beginning to become quite a factor in the fuel situation in this, city. and the dealers report that the past year has shown a large increase in its use. Coal as a fuel is now about on a par with wood in the cost, and if the price of the latter shows the same proportion of an Increase during the, coming year as it has done during the past few seasons, coal will be much the cheap est fuel.
