Portland shipyards , now present a
, busy scene. Both the steamers Dalles
.City and the Bailey Gatsert are at Bud-
ple's to receive a general Overhauling.,
in addition to other 'alterations which
will bemade.to the' Gatzert she is -to
fee converted Into an oil burner. .
Work will also be started at tlie same
placo in a few days on' the two dredges
which are to be built tor the govern
ment. One of them is to be operated
on the Upper Columbia and Snake rivers,
and the- other on the upper Willamette.
A light draft ; steamer ; for .Alaskan
waters 1 also to be built there this
spring. -
At the Portland yards preparations
are being made to build a small steamer
which , will be operated on the Snake

Joseph Paquet. ha a force of men at
work on the hull of the new ferryboat
for Alblrta. If is the intention to have
this boat; ready to be placed in commis
sion by the middle of August. Naval
Architect Ballln; who drew up the plans
and specifications for the craft, says
, that the work has been somewhat de
layed on account of the' fact that the
city had no funds until the sale .or
bonds authorised by the legislature
jcould be effected. Bids for the bonds
'will be opened on March 3, but in the
meantime, ho says, work on the vessel
is to be pushed. The Columbian Engi
neering Works has most of the patterns
made for the machinery and Joseph
Monks has all the plates on hand for the
boilers.
She haB been christened Albina ferry
boat No. 2, and will have the distinction
of being the largest ferryboat on the
Willamette or the Columbia-rivers, ex
cepting the one operated by the North
ern Pacific Railroad company between
Kalama and Ooble. Her dimensions are
as follows: Length, 140 feet; beam. 32
feet: beam over guards, 62 feet; depth
of hold. 8.3 feet; draft, 2.5 feet.

Notice Is hereby given that the council of
the city of Portland proposes to assess the
following described property and owner or
owners as belug specially and peculiarly bene
fited In tbe amounts set opposite tb r sines
snd descriptions thereof by the coustriictl-in
of a sewer In Belmont street, from 18 fe-t
west of the east lino of Prettymsn avenue to
the sewer in Eaot TMrty-seventb street, as pro
vided by ordinance Ho. 13.632.
Any objection to tbe apportionment of cost
for said sewer must be made In writing to

Sealed proposals will be received at the
office of the auditor of the city of Portland
nntll 4 o'clock p.' m., March 4, 1904, for
printing for one year, for tbe city of Port
land, as follows: .
First For printing and binding 1751 copies
of the mayor s message and municipal reports
for the veer 1008. ,
SocondFor printing and furnishing blanks
and other miscellaneous printing ss msy lie
required from tlnio to time by the several
of sees and departments of the elty.
Third For printing, binding and furnishing
such bliinks, warrants, etc., a are required
to be lithographed.
All bids must be bssed upon the specifica
tions on file 1u the i.fnce of the auditor and the
quality of materials must be squat to samples
submitted.
Separate bids will be received for each of the
threit elrsses of wotk, as shove set forth, but
110 bid for a less s mount than the entire work
in each class will be considered.
Eech bid must be acromoanled by a. certified
