General PAssenger Agent A. I Craig
of ; the Oregon Railroad & Navigation
company pushed his chair back and
gaged out art the rain. "Nice damp
weather," ha said with a smile, ' "'What
a relief and a change from a cold, dry
spell of S3 degrees below sero!"
Mr. Craig . returned last week from a
trip to Chicago, Bt. Loula and Kansas
City and was confined to his home sev
eral days on account of a severe cpld.
He is still suffering from the effects of
his illness, but Is rapidly recovering";?
.There is but little new In the east,"
he said,; "People are beginning to know
a little more concerning the Lewis and
Clark fair : .and the residents of St.
Louis are booming their exposition;
Everything , isln readiness for a big
movement of homeseekeri after . March
1. But . at this time It- is Impossible
to make any estimate of the number of
settlers who will come west this season.
After the smoke clears Away we -will
be able to count noses.. I am pleased at
the way in which the chamber of com
merce is Interesting itself in the adver
tising of .Oregon, 'of v.eh too: much
Cannot be said."
Mr. Craig looks, for the -largest: at
tendance at the St Louis fair to come
from Chicago. Cincinnati, Memphis and
intermediate points and the neighboring
states. 'The fair is going to be large.
It la hard for ope to realise that It la
to .be half as large again as the Chi
cago exposition, for at the Columbian
fa(r everything -was new and there was
no comparison to draw from."
- Speaking of Oregon Vacant lands, Mr.
Craig said:, "People must not get the
idea that there Is plenty of vacant
farming land In this state. ; There : are
tracts that are not yet' ready for set
tlement and others that are undesirable,
One cannot afford to go back 2 5, or 20
miles from the railroad and raise wheat.
The haul is too great. ' Lands already
settled are worth money."
Mr. Craig declares that it Is a big
undertaking to Induce a dozen families
to think of doing the same thing, and a
great deal bigger one to persuade 1,000.
"When a man tells me that he Is going
to bring 4n a colony of 1,000 families,"
he said. "I put it down that he doesn't
know what he is talking about." ,
