vMuch Interest is being manifested
along the waterfront in tbe matter of a

with , the easy movements of the river

the shipyards, and holders of vacant
waterfront property do not seem inclined
to provide berth space for the Are flglit

OPERATIONS A FAD.
rnblio Gradually Awakens to the Tact.
The latest fad in operations has been
the appendicitis fad; before that .the fad
for rectal operations (piles, etc.) held
sway. Hundreds of patients were fright
ened and hurried into Hospitals, oper
ated upon and robbed of their last dol
lar, when the trouble was a. simple case
of hemorrhoids or piles - only, easily
cured at home with a, simple remedy
costing but fifty cents a oox.
"I procured one fifty-cent bog of Pyr
amid Pile Cure of my druggist, with the
intention' of buying a larger box later,
but was happily surprised when I found
that ' I ' was cured, and still have six
"pyramids' left out of the first and only
"box. I have not had the least sign ot
plies since I used this one box. which
lias been about two months; previous
to using Pyramid Pile Cure I had the
worst kind of bleeding and protruding
i piles for over thirty-one years,, and no
. one knows., except those who have had
the piles, the pain-and misery I suf
fered. ' "'
I am a poor man, out nave orten said
I would give a fortune, ir I had it, to
be cured of the piles, end , now I have
been cured for fifty cents. I should be
very ungrateful if I did not thank you
and give .you every privilege to use my

are so many who suffer as I dld. J. A.

Fraud is charged In the signing of the
remonstrance against tho proposed
Twenty-third , street . asphalt improve
ment by A-' Tichenor and those favoring
the betterments, who are straining every
effort to defeat the protest They even
took' (he remonstrance .to the office of
the city clerk and verified. the names and
amount ' of - property represented upon
the communication. As yet the final re
suits are in doubt but it is feared that
the remonstrance will win by a narrow
margin. Up to yesterday afternoon a few
(rlenda of the improvement were still
working over the flies to see Which side
carried the majority, . . ' ,
Roughly speaking, an investigation has
developed that' 80.000 square feet 11 of
property is contained on the protest
which is illegal It is said that hus
bands signed for .property registered
as owned by their ; wives without ,any
power of attorney; that there are sev
eral names for property which is. owned
by other people, and that any number
of. names have been duplicated. Acting
upon these charges ; the city officials
went to work, and by careful, verifica
tion established the fact T that 30,000
square feet were wrongfully represented
on the protest Among those whose sig
natures were declared invalid were: John
Schmidt' for.. Emma 1 Schmidt," Charles
Hanson for Mary Hanson, W. T. Hutton
for George TutJioft and W.. T. Hutton,
J.-Gill for Lisa Gill. J. Gordon for Wil
liam Gordon, without any power of at
torney, and the German Savings & Loan
society without the seal of the firm. In
two or three Instances a search of the
offlciaLrecords. Showed property owned
under one name and signed on the pro
test by Someone else.
Record Clerk Smith, after spending
several hours' of labor on the problem,
announced that in his opinion the remon
strance still carried enough legitimate
names to defeat the improvement. "
Twenty-third street is the thorough
fare ' offering a direct approach to the
site of the-Lewis and Cfark fair, and
the city officials had hoped to' see the
paving proposition go through.' There
are .a nu rn.be r of handsome and costly
residences on the street, and the cross
walks and surface is said to have gone
from bad to worse until it is in a de
plorable state.
Another street that Is arousing unus
ual attention is Burnslde, ' from the
bridge . to Sixth 'street on this side, of
the river. The surfacing of boulders
presents the' appearance of a wide row
of conical-shaped mounds set with the
small end to the sky. Almost the orig
inal cost of the improvement has been
spent for repairing broken wagons and
vehicles that have come to grief over
both sides of the street are mere apolo
gies for the most part, and still bring
in the largest revenue of any business
property in the city. The " saloon
men and gamblers who rent me places
there pay enormous prices for the facil
ities offered.

YOUNG MORGAN WEDS
ORIENTAL FOR LOVE
, (Journal Special Serrlre.) "
' San Francisco, Feb. 1$. George D.
Morgan,, a nephew of 3. P. Morgan, has
brought home his bride, a full-blooded
Japanese woman, on the Pacific Mall
steamship phlna from Yokohama.. This
was their wedding Journey. ' Mrs. Mor
gan is not what could be called beauti
ful. Perhaps her expression might-be
called sleepy , or languid, r: Her nose la
long and. her complexion might be that
of a meerschaum pipe in its youth. She-
was habited in full Japanese costume
and was playing with a handsome fox
terrier. Obviously she felt rather
strange to her surroundings and' then
she shuffled off with a queer shambling
gait that seems inseparable from' the
sllppety-slappety slippers or sandals of
her country. It was a love match pure
and simple. . Mr. Morgan denied that
there was anything in the story that he
had paid 10,000 yen or any 6ther sum
for his wife. It was nothing uncom
mon to buy a wife, but that was not
his case. He had wooed,. her and won
her In her native tongue. Mrs. Morgan
peaks no English. . The couple are
going straight- to New York. Morgan
denies he waa engaged. to a belle of
New York.
