HAL CORBETT COMES
OUT OF DIFFICULTY

'. Spokane, Feb. 16. After much weary
waiting the , creditors of Hal Corbett,
the 8pokane lawyer, who held forged
checks which he passed, have been satis
fied. : Corbett Is the young attorney who
came here from Montana a couple of
years ago and recently cut a wide
swath in sporting circles with, his
gambling and his plunging on the horse
races. He left the city a short time
ago, but before leaving he left In his
wake a lot of forged checks. The
check for $200 passed on Archie Ash
was made good a week ago and yester
day the forgery of a $76 check which
was cashed by H. 8org of the Club cafe
was taken ip. Borg says he was ap
proached by a total stranger who
offered to make the amount of tha check
good.- Sorg had never seen the man be
fore. This same party also took up
the check which Corbett passed on the
Victoria - hotel , people, the amount of
which was $28. The other forgeries
have also beep, made good, ; ,

Pendleton. Or.. Feb, 18. An Increase
of $88,801 is shown in the tax roll for
Umatilla county this year, compared
with that of rhe prevloua year. The
total to be collected la $224,16, against
8168,384 last year. . -.
The poll tax amounts to $1,000, the
general state and county tax to $184.
148.80, the special school district tax
to $27,388.87. tha city taxes, $11,088.11.
The roll has been completed and will
be In the hands of the sheriff next
