Front Street, Feb. IB. The principal
Items of interest in the Portland whole-
said market today were:
Hog demand very large. . r
? California egga arrive.
Best butter cleans up.
Cninese buyers of poultry, s
Temporary lull In hop. ; .
Hay Is lower, .' r '
Salmon la advanced. . ,
1'otatoes very dull.
Good prospects for onions, '
California steamer arrives.-
I Salt combination Is likely.
' Provisions are Arm. ,
A Hull in Hops. .
Just at this moment there is con
atderable of a lull in the hop market
and some of ' the holders who were so
strong a week ago are not very anxious
to sell at former prices. One ' large
holder who was offered as cents a week
ago is now very anxious to sell at 1 cent
. lower, and still the dealers do not care
to buy. ; The situation is weaker and
will likely remain in that condition for
some time; ' , -
Contracts Axe lower. '
The lull In the demand for hops has
also caused a weaker feeling In the con
tract market and the highest figures be
ing offered now are at about' 17 and IS
cents. The foreigners are not now in
this market
Hog Demand Very Large.
There Is a very large -demand now
prevailing for all kinds of hogs, but the
principal call remains In the block stock.
Too many of the larger sizes have lately
been on the market to call that line In
extra heavy demand, but so far all ar
rivals have been sold at prices border
ing around the top and In some cases
slightly above.
' Teal Scarcity Continues.
Just why the receipts of Veal are so
light cannot be explained by the com
mission men. for, they say, the prices
now are very good. They also say there
is plenty of voal In the country, but the
holders seem to be speculating on the
future. The history of former years
indicated . that the top. of ; the market
has ' about been reached. Other meats
are In light receipt with the demand
quite good. ' .;
California Eggs Arrive.
About 100 cases of California eggs
arrived on 'the street today. . Receipts
of local stocks are showing a mild In
crease, but still the supply Is not quite
equal to the demand. : Despite this tact
the trade will not pay any more than
present prices, for once the price is
-down it Is -a -wy hard problem- to get
it up again. Today's quotations on eggs
range from It to 17 cents.
;. Best Butter la Demand. .. .
The demand now prevailing for the
best grades of creamery butter is fully
equal to the supply, which la consid
ered quite short. The arrivals of off
grades, or seconds, are quite large with
stocks still showing an accumulation.
The receipts of country store and dairy
butter are again becoming larger with
the demand off nearly altogether.
. : Chinese Boy Poultry.
Of late the Chinese have been very
heavy buyers of poultry and this, with
the rather light receipts, has kept the
market moving upward.. The Chinese
are especially large callers for ducks
and geese, but' after this week the de
mand will fall off and prices will again
retain tpeir normal, condition. This
seems to be an off-season for turkey
demand, but the receipts are still large.
Old hens and mixed chickens find ready
sale at printed figures. . . .
Salmon Zs Advanced. '
As was told In The Journal last week,
the receipts of fresh salmon were
smaller .than for many years and today
me quotations on Bllversldes show an
advance of 1 cent a pound. Receipts of
Chinook are also small with no changes
In former prices. Smelt were entirely
out oi 'tne market today. , . ;
Potatoes Very Boll.
The .large shipment of potatoes from
this city to San Francisco during the
paBt month have caused that market to
be badly overstocked and prices are
weaker and lower. In this city there
Is hardly any effort among the dealers
o ouy ior- outsiae shipment. Ijocal
trade In potatoes Is good, but the only
can seems to be ior the medium grades.
" ' Kay Zs Xowr. ' :-
The hay market Is showing only dull
ness toaay, ana prices are down about 0
cent a ton on all grades. The main
trouble with the market . now is that
so many farmers are uttering their
biocks ror sale, and the demand Is not
very good. The cause of the dullness In
this market Is due to the mild winter
on tne ranges and ' the consequent
smaaer demand ior hay. . ,
' Oood Prospects for Onions.
The prospect for .high prices for
onions were never so good as they are
today. All over the state the shippers
have' sent out their buyers who are
freely offering 2 cents a pound for the
best stocks. Some of the dealers are
freely predicting a J-cent market before
the end of the season, but this is only
epculatlon, and no one knows what the
price will be until that time arrives.
There is a large call ror stocks from
Texas, Arisona and California. Local
buying demand is very good at top fig
ures. " Salt Combination Zs Zdkely.
There are rumors all along the street
of an early combination of salt interests.
The salt men have come to the conclu
sion that they cannot force each other
out of business and are inclined to
again, combine to regulate the market
In that event higher - prices may be
looked for. , ,
Wheat Shows Bo Changes.
Although there Is a greater demand
for wheat of all graaes tne quotations
are not showing any change today. The
quotations In the flour markets are look
ing up, with no changes in the lists to
day. Japan has not yet awarded any
of the talked-of orders to Portland mill
ers. . . - . .( - . .. ;V .

COMPANY MAKES
LARGE DONATION
Notwithstanding the heavy loss of
11.000,000 sustained by (he recent Balti

ance company has generously offered to
subscribe $10,000 to the relief fund if I
the money be needed. , Out of the many
companies both large and small none
have come to the frout with a similar
offer. It might be said, the Royal la
the most generous company of Its kind
in existence. But three companies sus
tained a loss of $1,000,000, namely, the
Liverpool. London A Globe company, the
North British & Mercantile and the
Royal Insurance company. . On another

. DEAR SIR: . "
Baltimore Conflagration
(Sanday and Monday, February 7th and 8th, 1904)
' The "Royal's" losses in Baltimore were about one million dollars, and the
oft-repeated statement that the "Royal' U ''Absolutely conflagration prootlS
has been verified. Thla was an unusual conflagration a large area of the beat
business section of the city having been burned over. On this class of business
the "Royal" writes its .largest lines. The company's assets on the first day of.
January exceeded $64,000,000, Its surplus $10,000,000 and its premium -,
income for 1903 914,000,000.- This loss -of $1,000,000 in relation to the
assets, surplus or income of this great 'company may be regarded 'as merely
nominal; the company's financial status has not been disturbed In the slightest r
degree. The company paid In fire losses fast year over $7,000,000 and thls
simply adds one seventh to Its ordinary total loss outgo, v , :
. - We congratulate you and 'ourselves upon being connected with a company,
ABLE BECAUSE OF ITS GREAT RESOURCES, to regard such a conflagra
tion as a mere Incident of the fire insurance business. These facts should bo -used
promptly and continuously with our clients arid other property owners.
The Baltimore disaster should demonstrate to every business man and house
holder the folly of Inadequate insurance. Many modern so-called, "fire-proof. ,
buildings In Baltimore went down with older and less substantial structures.
The property loss is estimated at one hundred million dollars with Insurance of '
about -thirty millions. Many a man In Baltimore is today ruined through hav
ing adopted the foolish policy of "carrying his own Insurance1 or by failure to .
select insurance that Insures. You, should " have no difficulty in placing a
"Royal" policy. It Is the very best. This Is a good time to secure new busi
ness. ' Faithfully yours, , - -
