One of the mosc Important additions to the equipment of the local fire de partment will be a new engine company near the Union depot, provision for which hasjuat been made by the ctly council ana executive board. As pointed out oy The Journal months ago the vicinity of the depot is an ex cellent location for an engine company. The surrounding territory contains many mantrfactTirini " establishments. --TlleTe are -miles of river front to protect and there-la, practically no tire protection under, present conditions: ; ... . '. ' ; ' ' The terminal company has offered the city a lot. 48 by 70 feet, on the east aide of- Fifth ' atreet between Hoyt and Irving; atreeta. On this lot the new flra quarters will be built and within four months Engine company 2 should ba In service. f The company will. have an extra, first sise. metropolitan steamer; with a capac ity of 1,100 gallons of water a minute. It Is the samaras engines 1 and 3 now In' service. Tha steamer is now nearlng completion in an eastern " factory, To run with it a hose wagon will ba built, the contract . for Which will shortly be let.. The company will be manned .by 10 men. The wagon will carry a small ex tension ladder.-. -i The contract for the new building will be awarded shortly? and aa the terminal company has. evinced Its good intention by giving tha city a perpetual lease on the ground. It has been suggested that the new station should be the best and moat substantial In the city. Portland's flra houses are said to be far behind those of other cities. Large cities In variably build their own engine houses of brick, and it is pointed out that a pressed brick building should ba erected here near the depot,' Another considera tion la that all new arrivals will sea this house and a substantial building of brick would give them a good Impression of Portland. It is also suggested that the house be ' made double ; so that In tht future, if - thought expedient, a truck company or a chemical could be quar tered In the same building. -v - ' . . As The Journal stated, tha new com pany will cover a large area' hitherto al most without fire 'service. Engine 2 will answer all alarms through the north end, covering the tenderloin district, the water front for many blocks and the vicinity of the terminal grounds. It will also be close to the sawmills along the north river front, while it will answer first alarm calls from the hospital and residence districts. For second alarms it will be needed in the heart of the city, and will be close to respond to calls from Alblna and other eat side districts.. One of the best features wlll.be that nglnes -l,- -nd-4-will be-bletftandle all fires of ordinary magnitude on the west side. This will obviate the ne- eeasltyt of falling" east side compantes to the west 1 side when second - alarm fires are discovered.'' Under the arrange ment to be adopted the east side, will not so often be ' left almost entirely at the mercy of the flames when a large fire occurs in the heart of the west side business district. , - ' ; : v - " . The salaries of the men . to handle en gine 2 are Included In Chief Campbell's estimate 'for; a full paid . department for' the year 1901. 0. -V : . . Engine 9, at Sunnyside, will probably go Into service ' some time this month. Chief Campbell desires to complete all the Improvements In these quarters be fore the apparatus is Installed. The painting contract has been let and the work will soon be finished... . With the 60 new hydrants ordered by the committee last Thursday the Are fighting equipment of the city will be greatly Improved. . f ' .
