Gill, San Francisco freight agent for the Lake Shore this morning. "lie -is named Lake Shore Gill and he is doing fine. In fact our line Is a regu lar mascot. Why, there was a fellow that for years shipped over our line. One day lie -got the fool Idea Into his head to try another route and he shipped via a competitor. I argued with him and told him something would happen sure unless . he returned to the Lake Shore. Well he refused and dropped dead In SO days from the time he made the change. Of course I was sorry, but then he was flying In the face of fate. '.Southern California has not had drop oC rain for months and has only had half an lnch-elnce April, but then there aro only two crops In- Southern Califor nia, tourists and oranges. There will be enough water for oranges and the tour lsts don't need any except an occasional sea breese: I think this country ia all right. Tour air Is bracing, your temper ature is miia ana your winter days, though a little gloomy, are , still and pleasant. I suppose the 1905 fair will boom the city and the country, and down our way we are going to help you out. We know the fair Is coming, and though we have our hands full at present with St. Louis business, still, when the time come you can count us in." . CAKE REELECTED PRESIDENT OF CLUB For the fifth time H. M. Cake has been reelected president of.the Portland Com mercial club. ,- At a meeting of the board of directors of the club held "Saturday nlgpt the officers for the. ensuing year were chosen. They are: H.' M. Cake, president; J. H. Thatcher,., vlaa-presl-dent: Edward Ehrman, treasurer; W- E. Coman, secretary. - All members of the new board of officers are known .as energetlo work era and much of the success of the club during 1903 was due to the cease less effort of Mr. Cake and the others. Trtt erred Stock Canned Qoods. . Allen & Lewis' Best Brand. Compared with the wheat exports from Portland a year ago the month of January. Just ended,, makes a very poor showing. Only four - grain vessels cleared from Portland during the month, while -for the corresponding period of last year there were '16. Including the Oriental liners. The total value of the cargoes dispatched ' the .- past month amounted to 1400,763. One year ago in January, the value of the grain ex ports was $1,628,645. In other words, there- was. almost four times the vol ume of business transacted during the first month of 1903 as on January, of this year. . . . Last January two steamers. cleared for the - Orient with wheat and . flour cargoes, five sailing vessels for South Africa, five for European porta, and three for Australia. During , the ,. present month three vessels cleared for. Europe and only one for South Africa, and these constituted the total grain fleet There have been no Oriental liners to clear during the month..,- - The reason held by exporters for the great ; discrepancy between the two months Is on account of the high price at which wheat is held in the United States. Until the local market gets on a parity with Liverpool quotations they do not expect much change in' the situa tion. European and South Africa im porters, they , say, are getting their grain very largely from other countries, where the price ia not so high as it is here. - :" ;,,T Another reason that the ' shipments have fallen off here is because Australia raised a big crop this year and did not have to draw so heavily on the United States as It drew laat year. ; Three lumber carriers cleared for eign. during the month. They were the Italian ship Ninfa, the barken tine T. P, Emlgh and the schooner Forester, which took out an aggregate of 8,482,421 feet of lumber. - The coastwise fleet for the month carried out 3,924,000 feet, mat ing the total amount of lumber to leave Portland during the last 30 days 7,' 406,431 feet, and several more vessels are about ready to -clear. While the grain exports shrank to : small propor tions the lumber shipments Vere far above the average! Both the export and coastwise trade are steadily growing. Not only at Portland has there been a big falling off. in grain shipments; the same situation exists at every port on the coast. Dull as local business In this line has been Portland still retains i good lead of Puget sound and San Fran Cisco, - ,.'; 5 . PORTLAND HEN LAYS The fire department is having its troubles these days with sick horses. No fewer than "four are laid up from one reason or another, the causes ranging from a sprain to "that tired feeling Substitutes are now in use. , Included in the list of equine invalids ia -."Colonel,. an animal whose connection with the de partment Is historic. Since Jie has been given a rest he is fast recuperating. 'Another animal, used by hose com pany No. 1, Is suffering from a diseased condition of the kidneys. At lire headquarters one of the horses is lame In the right forefoot. It is be lleved he stepped on a rock and sustained a sprain. Fire Chief Campbell thinks this animal will again be in condition for use this week. AN OSTRICH EGG C R.
