The decline of 10 cents a hundred In the .quotations on all grades of sugar, which was exclusively announced In The Journal ' yesterday, was not much of a surprise to those on the Inside of the sugar situation. Local wholesale gro cers have anticipated . this move fur soma time and their buys of late have only been from hand to mouth. , Not a single wholesaler in- this city was caught by the decline.1 Some of . the retailers were caught, however. ' Advaaoa In Eastern Oats. The manufacturers of Quaker and Scotch oats, package goods ot eastern make have announced an advance of 10 cents a case in the former rjuotatlons. This makes the new quotations on.botu of these brands stand at $4 a case. The Innol wi.rlrat fnr vnllA Aftifl 111 in eX- cellent shape, and will 'likely follow the leatt or tne eastern- concerns. . changes were, however, made today. Advance Hard to Maintain. - The advance of 5 cents a roll In the quotations on the better grades or creamery announced yesterday Is bard to maintain. The arrivals of the bet ter grades are very small, and this Is what caused the dealers to make the ihanff. Snm. nf thAU Whn r8 Still selling the better stocks at 30 cents a pound say that an advance in tne quota tions on local goods Is unwarranted at this time on account of the condition of tha eastern market. Just now, the ar rivals of eastern butter In. this market are very large, and the advance of yes terday will have the effect of bringing In more outside stocks and causing the local goods to remain unsold. ... Armour has brought in large supplies of Elgin creamery which, it Is said, he is selling at 23 cents a pound. A large amount of renovated butter is also being brought In, and this Is selling at from 10 to 20 cents a pound. With renovated or pro cess butter In the market at very low figures, It Is veiry hard to dispose of local country store and dairy at any flgureTTReceipta are again quita-large and stocks are accumulating at a large rata, ! : Vc.ta.tA Market la Easier. ' The potato market shows indications of easing up, ana mere is not tns r scramble for stocks among the local kuv.M am tsar wns about a week aso. The cause Is t" Inability of the dealers to ship what stocks Tney nave on nanu, and they are unwilling' to invest more until they see which way the wind Is inr to blow In Ban Francisco. One dealer alone has 100 cars of good stocks on hand. It .Is understood among the shipping trada that the next steamer from this city to San Francisco will take out about 7.000 sacks the stocks which were left over from the last boat If this amount of potatoes goes down, it will not cause such havoc with prices as was anticipated a few days ago. ; Onions Continue Good. ' The onion market continues In good shape, with $1.25 tha top buying price out in the country. The demand from San Francisco and other southern points Is very large, but the present prices are all that local dealers can af forrt(TTyrwlth: the 'Frisco market at its present stage. , Much Contracting of Hops. There Is no change in the current news. Cables are still dull, primary receipts were again below those of last year, We rather advise selling July wheat on the sharp rallies. Cora Without Change. .The corn market Is practically with out change. It, showed quite' a little strength early on commission v bouse buying, but lost It on the weakness In wheat before the close. . There is quite a local bear contingent, but so far their efforts to permanently depress prices nave not oeen successiui. Oats a Grade) Satier. The oats market closed a shade easier without much change. It is also very dull. The holdings of long oats seemed to be In strong hands and there Is no very active' bear condition. The move ment Is still small and 'the demand la fair. Provisions Close Easier. The provision price closed a little easier. ' Receipts of hogs are about the same as last year, but at the yards prices were a little lower. The tendency Is for the distributive demand to fall off.
