The situation between the mayor and
chief of police remains unchanged. Spo
kane has two chiefs of police and each
claims to be filling the office and draw

Peoria, 111., Jan. 25. Pursuant to a de
cision reached by the creditors of the
Acme Harvester company, against which
bankruptcy proceedings were recently in
stituted;' the works of the company re-
sumed -operation today, after a ? shut
down of sveeral months. ' Seven hundred
operatives, have been given employment.
It lsi now believed all claims will be
settled' without forcing the concern into
bankruptcy. , . .

Spokane,-Wash.. Jan. 25. Along with
common drunks Spokane's reputed dive
owners were arraigned in the police
court late' Saturday ; afternoon. . The
men were, Arrested on warrants sworn
out by L. S. Streyffelar who represents
the Ministerial association. ' Besides the
prisoners and complaining witness 'a
delegation of, ministers were -in the
court room to watch the proceedings.'
The name of . J. D. Flnley was called
first hnd lie took the prisoner's chair
with a smile and pleaded "not guilty"
after hearing the charge. Attorney H.
A. Wells appeared for the defendant and
the' case was set for Thursday after
noon of this week. J. D. Flnley la se
nior member of . the lumber brokerage,
firm of Flnley & Pratt, with offices on
the fifth floor of the Empire .State
building. He is also a trustee of the
Fourth Presbyterian church. His part
ner is one of the clty aldermen.
R. T. Daniel Was called next and he
also waived the. reading of the com
plaint and pleaded not guilfy as did each
of the men. The cases were sll set for
Thursday afternoon. R. T. Daniel Is a
man of considerable wealth and Is the
owner of -the building which was for
many years occupied by the Owl sa
loon and gambling parlors operated by
Doc . Brown, . now of Portland. Frank
Bruno, an Italian poolroom proprietor
was the third in line. He had no at
torney and his case went over like the
rest.' Anthony BaYone, a saloonkeeper,
and Eugene Altken, also a saloonkeeper,
were the nest In line and their cases
met the same fate. "Dutch Jake" Qoets
and Harry "Baer met 'the same, fate.

famous Coeur d'Alene theatre in this
city. .- The men , were all released on
their recognisance. In all cases the vio
lation of the law was alleged to have oc
curred on December t. The warrant
for -Jerome Drumhellet-of-theJlrra. of
Drumheller A Malloy, Insurance and real
estate brokers, .was returned unsatisfied
as Drumheller is at present in , New
York on business. A warrant for
Charles Crosby has not yet been served.
That individual .cannot be" located and
It is supposed that possibly the, name is
only a dummy used to protect some,
other person. - One John Doe warrant re
mains unserved and it Is not known who
the ministers are after with It -

A determined fight will be made by all
the men. It Is reported that the con
stitutionality of the law will e tested
and some of the men will allege that
they have sold the property, and others
that they rented it for lodging house
purposes, and that they cannot prevent
the lessees from using it for whatever
purpose they desire.
The complaints were drawn upon In
formation obtained from the records at
the Courthouse and real estate maps
bearing the names of different owpers
of downtown property. The evidence in
cludes the police records, showing that
the women occupying the rooms pleaded
guilty In the police court of living Uvea
of immorality and paid Ones assessed
