XAVT TEAKS TEtB PBXBTCB or xxs wtopxsaiow zs irow past tl EJQXTY TEAM Or AOS. r : " : (Journal Special Bnfict.) : , Trenton, N. J., Jan. 25. Early to morrow morning the gates ol New Jer ' epy" atate prison will open for the, re loafte of William E. Brockway, who, in the words f the United States author ities, is "the most dangerous counter feiter and forger who ever operated in . America." Brockway has completed his "terra of ten years' imprisonment, minus ., the allowance for good behavior . and -. plus to days which be was required to Serve in lieu of the $1,000, fine Imposed ., on him. Brockway is not only a remarkable man, but be has given the secret serv ice detectives of the Washington gov ' eminent more -'sleeplsa nights than all th other counterfeit money . manufac turers In the country. yrhe-secret of his -so-called success has been ills ability , to make genuine bank notes, and bonds seem counterfeit when compared with his marvelous work. It ,1s said that when Unite, States treasury notes and , Brockway's counterfeits were handed to An expert for examination he threw out ' the ' genuine notes as counterfeit and pronounced Brockway'' money genuine. ' This is why the man was considered so " great a menace to the finances of the government. When arrested and tried in court he managed his case with con summate skill, and counsel for the gov ernment called it "great luck" when he was convicted at alL f : r , "Brockway was born in Connecticut In 8!2 and his first work was in the studio of Prof. Morse, then a portrait painter, and later the discoverer of telegraphy. Here ? Brockway learned something of art, His career as a forger and counterfeiter began in 1880, it is said.' , He was arrested by the government in 1880 for the forgery of 1204,000 United States 6 per cent $1,000 bonds. 'For this he was sentenced to ' 30 years in prison, but upon his sur rendering all his counterfeiting tools and giving valuable information con cerning similar swindles sentence was suspended. , faW-V- ' He was arrested again An 188 for i forging Morris and Essex railroad f bonds and sentenced to Ave years in ' state prison.- .The suspended sentence was for some - reason not enforced against him. . . ' V . Brockway lived for many years under the nam of Spencer 'in, Brooklyn, with his wife, eon and daughter. He passed as a sea captain, and his absences from home were accounted for as "voyages." The family were ardent church workers, and Brockway himself frequently at , tended church services. " He was sup . posed to be an eminently -respectable member of society until he had trouble with his wife. Soon afterward he was arrested for crossing the Wall street "dead line," and his real character was disclosed. - , - - - - ' The details of the arrest at Hoboken of Brockway and his alleged acoora ' puces have been widely published; The detectives found $200,000 in Canadian notes, with only the reverse side printed; $200,000 in United States gold certificates, nearly finished, and fibre paper prepared for printing $400,000 more. It is said that the counterfeiters were backed by some of the wealthiest and cleverest criminals In the country. But the authorities do not apprehend any further trouble from' the "dean of counterfeiters." He is now 81 years old and leaves prison broken in health and spirit. It is his intention to pass the remainder of his days with xela tlves in Northern New Jersey. TWO MYSTERIES ARE YET TO BE SOLVED . (Journal Special Service.) ' 1 ; : Spokane, , Wash,, Jan. 28. Spokane's two mysteries, .that of the sudden disap pearance of a woman and that of the death of Mrs. J. T. MufCett bid fair to remain unsolved. All Jast week a spe ctatdftgcttve worked on the Muffett esse and Saturday afternoon he mad his report to Coroner D. I Smith. The man detailed to do the work was . De tective Alee McDonald, one of the best men on the Spokane police force. Upoa receiving his report the coroner decided that ha could find no ground for any possible suspicion to be attached to any one and that he would hold no inquest. The - funeral of the woman In conse quence occurred Sunday afternoon. The son, William Muffett, who is an invalid, SO years of .age, 'was the only one in -the house at the time of her death. Detective McDonald subjected him to a severe sweating. He took him to the cellar of the house and .made him re hearse 'the scenes Incident to the find ing of his mother's body. MoDonald employed all toe means known to de tectives to force the truth out of the witness, but the story of the son could not be shaken in the. least. In his re port McDonald says that In his mind there Is no ground for- any suspicion being directed towards the son. ' The report of the chemist who is anal- , Jilng the stomach of Mrs. Muftett has not as yet been received by Coroner Smith. This may throw some light on the cause of the woman's death. The post mortom showed all the other or gans of the body to be in a healthy condition, and Coroner Smith Is con- :vlneed that death did not result from " strangulation. . It may be a week yet before the chemist is ready to report If poison is found in the stomach of the' woman in sufficient quantity to cause death the mystery will then as sume a different phase, v Whether the poison was administered to the woman by another or taken by herself the strange ' rope marks on her neck will have to he accounted for.' It Is the opinion of the doctors who examined ' 'the body that death could not; have been caused by strangulation. A7TZR TXS WHEAT OOMBXKE. (Journal Special Service.)' Spokane, Wash.,. Jan, 25-People fof Eastern Washington are after the wheat combine, and are apparently determined to leave no stone unturned to accom plish its downfall. On account of the action of the mtltmen and exporters It Is claimed that . wheat has been held down in price In this section while the markets in other parts of the world have been advancing. In September , wheat went , up to'; 71 cents and it Is claimed that a combine was formed for the purpose of keeping the price down. Since that time It has dropped to 1 cents a bushel, without a corresponding drop In other1 markets of the world, it Is now proposed to place the matter be fore Governor McBrlde and ask him to tsk tha necessary, steps to crush out the combine. For this purpose petitions - are being circulated throughout the In land empire asking the governor to take up tha matter. -" Register today and sign the petition for direct primary nomtislons.
