During the past few day six steam
boats which were engaged , in the lojr-
towing business, have been taken out uc
oommlBBlon and are now tied up iac
their docks. .The lumber trade has be
come . alack ! and the aawmllls are not
running to their full capacity. , These
are the reasons given for the boats
being Idle. , - ,
The Albany of La Camas Trans
portation company's fleet, which has
been towing for the Portland lumber
mill, laid oft her crew yesterday, and Is
now lying at . the foot Of Oak street.
It is announced ' that she will remain
there for fully two weeks and perhaps
longer,
The Gamecock and Vulcan, of the
Jones 'Towing ' company, which ' have
been used for towing logs to the In
man-Poulsea mill, are now Out ot com
nils ton, . , .
The Cascades, now towing logs from
points down the river to the North Pa
clflc-mlll. will tie up today.
The. Fannie, which has been tinder
charter to the Same company,' waa laid
up a few days ago, as was. also the
No wonder bf the Shaver Transporta
tion company's fleet, - She had been
towing for the Eastern tnilL ' t 4
The situation la very discouraging to
steamboat men, whose vessels are now
lying idle. Excepting the Inman-Poulsen
plant there is not a sawmill ra the .city
that is running to its full capacity. As
a consequence all of - them are well
stocked with logs, and not lit need of
towing. .' ;
Preparations are being made to close
down the North Pacific mllL ; It is an
nounced that the machinery . is to be
given -an annual overhauling, and that
the shutdown will be but temporary.
Owing to there being no business In
sight, several of the steamboat , owners
will avail themselves of the opportunity
to repair their vessels. The Gamecock
is now at Kupple's yards where she will
be given a complete new hull.
Until tha last week or two the lum
ber and log-towing business at Portland
was in a most flourishing condition. A
big fleet of tugs waa kept busy supply
lng the several i mills with log rafts
which were brought from the vari
ous camps down the river. The mills
were running to their full capacity in
order to- fill the foreign and domestic
orders which were being constantly re
eelved. , All at once a change came, but
no one appears to be able to give a sat
isfactory answer for ft.
'This always Is a dull season- of the
year." Is the rathep vague explanation
given. 1 :

--?: - ANNOUNCEMENT -
This page will be made interesting to readers of The Oregon Daily Journal as well as of
profit to advertisers and readers of " Want Ads." Many Portland readers little realize how
very interesting the "want" columns of a newspaper are, until the "want ads." art read as
carefully as the local news page. dThere is much character displayed in the wording of an
'ad." and considerable information to be had not found in the news columns, to say noth
ing of the many opportunities no doubt overlooked by the average reader. The "want"
columns of a newspaper are of more .value to a reader than the news columns because
thert? are people always wanting something that the reader may profit by. This paper will
endeavor to make the "want" columns of exceeding interest and as popular as any depart
ment of the paper. ' The Oregon Daily Journal should be the leading "want" advertising
medium! for the following reasons: It is the popular paper of the people; an evening paper
publishes news twelve hours ahead of morning papers; an evening paper is the after
dinner paper, when the family have time to read it ;. For the last reason "want" ads. com
mand more consideration than in morning papers, which are hurriedly looked over before
breakfast because of lack of time. When a reader wants something it is usually much
needed and the morning paper reader pays no attention to classifications not likely to
contain the offering of that particular "want" Advertisements should be read shortly
after the wants are made known, and the evening paper is therefore the best medium. .
" Try The Journal's "want" columns and obserye the result
