The first annual report of the Oregon Information bureau has been made pub lic by Assistant Secretary Q. O. Blrrel. It shows the work of the bureau for 12 months endlng January 1, 1904. ' The preliminary- steps of organization and purchase of furniture were taken before t-th-pTeseTit-Bttacher-tookrcharge,whloh was In last April, when Dr. LeKoy ana Mr. Blrrel were chosen to push the work of the bureau. The object of the bureau Is to develop and settle Oregon, and' for this object 98 subscribers have - pledged $16000. State organisations have been formed to' co-operate with the home bureau. Gradually the officers have gathered ex tensive exhibits of the products of the state and a great amount of literature. : The report says that "861 letters have been written and 378 received, 8,104 pieces of literature have been mailed and 17.968 otherwise distributed, and 4,916 visitors have registered at the bureau. Among other visits of the year, the board of trade and promotion committee of California at Ban Francisco were In turvlowed and their methods studied. The report adds: ; "To carry on our bureau on lines simi lar to those Of our sister state's pro motion committee, would necessarily mean a larger expenditure of money for advertising . and entertainment, ' as the large bulk of this work 18 relegated to that committee for handling." : Already 104 persons have been located In the state directly through the work of the bureau, and hundreds of others have doubtless been first attracted by the dis plays and literature of the bureau,. One of the tet tiers has invested in the state 820,000, and, averaging the remainder of the 104 settlors to represent 81,000, the wisdom of the inyestment In the bu reau in already believed to be shown. ' : The total expense of the year, much of which was contracted prior to the be ginning of the .actual' work of the bu reau In April, is 84,029.63, to which should be added 82G7 donated In mer chandise, printing and telephone service. The executive committee and board of trustees of the bureau have full man agement of its affairs. The board la as follows! Chums H. ' Ladd, ' chairman; W. M. KUIingsworth, secretary; W. H. Beharrell, T. L. Honeyman , and ,R. C. Judson. ' The executive committee num bers the following members:. W. H. Be harrell (chairman), R. C Judson, -T. D. Honeyman. ladd & Tllton's . bank is treasurer of the bureau. NERVOUS DELEGATES ' SAILING THE BAR It was storming and the waves were dashing high as the tug Tatooah, bear ing President F. J. Hagenbarth and sev eral other members of the National Live stock association and their wives, steamed over the bar at the mouth of the Columbia, river Saturday afternoon. One of the worst seas he ever encoun tered was the . way the captain of the tug described the water, and before the little vessel had taken half a doten dips, Secretary ' Martin and several of the women' nervously agreed with the skip per. The seas became so rough that out of ' consideration for .his passengers the captain put back to calmer water. . Those who made the trip to the mouth of the river and to Seaside Saturday were: Mr. ' and Mrs, , Hagenbarth," Mr. and Mrs. Martin, Major and Mrs. E. C. Hoghton of Mexico,' Mr." and Mrs. Jesse Smith of Salt Lake City, Mr and Mrs. C J. Mellls of Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brosa of Portland and Hon. Jerry Simpson of ' New Mexico. - , , LABOR GATHERING : NEXT MONDAY NIGHT ' I U: A movement Is now onroot 'W "have several of the building trades unions to Join the American Labor union In a, body. Many pf the Individual members of the union are In favor of the, plan, but others . are strenuously oppesed to it. Those having the matter in hand state it to be very probable that the, proposal will bp submitted to the labor organisa tions at an early late. A -referendum vote will then be taken. ,: - ;.;.. An A. Pearson, local agent for the Pa cific Coast Seamen's union has had a conference wjth Deputy District At torney Spencer on the subject of whether, or not he wilt be required to take out a license, Mr. Spencer gave it -as--ts -opinion-thai- r!ieense-would have to be procured, but advised Mr, Pearson to get the advice of his attor ney before deciding upon what steps to take In the matter. 5 Charles F. Hammarln arrived Sat urday from San Francisco to take the place of Mr. Pearson as agent of the union.- He, succeeded to the -position at the last annual election of the or ganisation. The license" proposition will also be submitted by the local agent to the headquarter . officials t8an - Francisco. In the event that the sum of 8500, which is the amount of the license specified by law, has to be procured, representa tives of the union state It to be very probable that the Portland branch of the organisation will be done away with, They are of the opinion that the bene fits accruing from the organization would not Justify the outlay of such a large sum of money. The Union was strongly opposed to the sailor boardlnghouse bill at the time it was introduced at the state legisla ture. While they admitted at the time that It was being put on the statute books for the ostensible purpose of curb ing the crimps, they also expressed the belief that the law would be' given a liberal interpretation mo as to include them in the same class as the sailor boardlnghouse keepers As they explain it they are In an entirely .different class. While they are engaged In the business of shipping sailors no fee Is exacted for furpishlng crews, and they conduct no boardlnghouse, ..' ; NEW BOAT BOILERS : ARE BEING INSTALLED A new Hind of boiler, the first ever used on the Willamette and Columbia river steamers, , Is being built by tha Astoria Iron works for the steamer Jordan, owned by the Calendar Trans portation company. One of a similar de sign Is also being manufactured by the Willamette Boiler works for the steamer Sadie B., which is now being remodeled at Supple's shipyards. , They are known as the "Two Shell" or "Hopkln's patent boilers." Although a comparatively new Invention the boiler has beeh in success ful' operation for sometime 'past in the steamer fiprague , on - the Mississippi river. Its advantage lies in the fact that, it is much less In diameter, but possesses the-same heating surface. : By marine engineers it is claimed that the Invention Is -a great' improvement over the boileranow in use. .
